The Sizes of Chains on Stihl Chainsaws
Stihl is a manufacturer that not only produces chainsaws, but also makes all the replacement parts needed for the saw, including chains. As with any brand of chainsaw, selecting the correct chain for a Stihl depends on knowing three different measurements and making one calculation. Stihl prints the information on the chain packaging so you can choose the chain that fits perfectly for your chainsaw model.
Length of the Chainsaw Bar
Bar measurement is the length from the point where the chainsaw’s bar first emerges from the casing, to the tip of the bar. The chain rotates around the bar as it cuts through wood. Stihl chainsaws come in sizes that range from 10 to as much as 59 inches. Chainsaw bar lengths are typically expressed in 2-inch increments, most often as an even number. Bar length is one component of selecting a Stihl chain, but other measurements more accurately determine a precise fit.
Drive links are the protrusions found on the underside of the chain. Look for them with the chainsaw off and its spark plug wire removed from the plug, preventing an accidental startup. Lift the chain slightly away from the bar and the drive links become apparent. These links, also called drive lugs, travel in a groove along the edge of the chainsaw bar. They engage the saw’s drive sprocket, which is what powers the chain. Count the number of drive links in the entire chain. Stihl chains have between 44 and total drive links in them.
Pitch of the Chain
The chain holds together with a series of rivets. Chain pitch is the distance between any three of these rivets divided by two. Stihl typically sells chains with one of three pitch measurements: 3/8-inch, inches or inches. Stihl uses a coding system that consists of a single digit or letter and that describes the chain’s characteristics. For example, 3/8-inch pitch chains have a “3“ stamped on the chain and printed on the package. Other pitch sizes include coded as 2, and coded as 4. Stihl also uses 1 for 1/4-inch pitch chains, none of which appear on its chain chart, as well as 6 and 7 for 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch PICCO chains respectively. PICCO is a trademarked cutting profile used on some Stihl chains.
The gauge of the chain is actually the thickness of a drive link. This measurement ensures the chain will ride around the bar without binding or slipping. Gauge is a small measurement, typically either , or inches on Stihl brand chains. Some Stihl chains employ a or a chain gauge. Stihl stamps the last digit of the chain gauge measurement (expressed in millimeters) on each drive link.
Other Chain Codes
While they do not specifically describe the size of a Stihl chain, the company also stamps other codes on its chains and chain packaging. These codes refer to the shape of the cutters -- the sharpened portions of the chain that dig into the wood -- or other chain characteristics, such as the shape of the ties that hold the drive links together. For example, a code of “C” means the chain cutters are made in such a way that vibration is lower and more comfortable for the chainsaw operator.
