Can you hang from a pullup bar? Then you might be a contender! We’ll look at some of Rogue’s pullup bars and other equipment in this article.

Rogue Cliffhanger Challenge – Overview

The Cliffhanger Challenge will run from the 5th of March until the 8th of March 2021. The goal of this challenge is to test your grip and be the athlete with the longest dead hang from a pull-up bar.

How does it work?

All participants 14 years old and above should first register at roguefitness.com/challenges. A $10 entry fee gets you into the competition and $30 gets you entry + an official Rogue Challenge t-shirt. The next thing to do is to submit your time and video evidence using the instructions in the Beyond the White Board app. During the course of participation in the competition, all participants, judges, and spectators must follow all social distancing and other local guidelines related to COVID-19.

How will it be scored?

The athletes with the longest hang will win the contest. Bodyweight will be the tie-breaker although it will only be requested following the competition in the event of a tie between two competitors. Heavier body weight would win the tie.

What equipment is needed to qualify?

1. Tape Measure

2. Visible Timer – this can be a gym timer in the frame, a phone with the timer feature up in the frame, or a stopwatch in the frame

3. Standard Pull-Up Bar with the following specs:

– Metal construction

– Standard straight shaft, NOT angled

– Standard powder coat, Cerakote, or bare steel finish is acceptable. The bar cannot be knurled or have any other type of artificial texturing added, including tape of any kind.

– Minimum diameter of the pull-up bar must be 1.125″ or 3.53″ circumference. There is no maximum measure for the same spec.

– There is no height requirement for the bar

It holds 1/4” laser-cut and bent steel channels (with laser-cut Rogue branding in one of them) and a black texture powder-coat finish. The channels are 8.5″ tall, and the height of the pull-up bar is 3.5″ below the mounting position of the included 5/8″ pin.

Rogue’s first pull-up bar is available in exclusive Cerakote color finishes, which are used broadly in the gun industry for its exceptional durability in thin applications, and it gives excellent abrasion/wear/corrosion resistance over time. It is a single, solid round bar that is precision machined in the USA with US steel or the US and CAN steel using 7-gauge steel.

It fits with any 43” space on a Monster Lite Series rack or rig and is furnished with a pair of tough mounting sockets to guarantee its endurance after installation. The two button-head screws secure the bar into the sockets to stop spinning (a 7/32” Allen wrench is required to tighten).

MIL Pull-up Station

The Rogue MIL Pull-Up Station is made to the needed specs of the Army Combat Fitness Test’s “Leg Tuck” event, having an elongated width of 62” between the two uprights to produce enough operating space for any size athlete. It includes the same 2×3” 11-gauge steel tubing and a standard single pull-up bar (1.25” diameter) as Rogue’s R-Series squat racks.

The MIL Pull-Up Station has a total footprint of 48” x 67” and an upright height of 93”, with the pull-up bar position adjustable from 90” down to 86”. All required 5/8” hardware is included, as is an attachable step (connected via detent pin) that can be set at either 18” or 24” from the ground—matching the step heights on the Army’s Climbing Pods. This step also consists of a large rubber insert that coats all metal corners for added protection.

It is placed at about a 45-degree angle and operates like a heavy-duty pull-up ladder, requiring greater muscle recruitment and explosiveness from an athlete as they progress from bar to bar. The Flying Pull-Up Bar can also be used with gymnastic rings, adding the greater height required for better muscle-ups and other movements.

When anyone asks me which pull-up bar I recommend, I always go with the P-4.

Let me explain why.

I love versatility with my workouts, which is why I often feel limited with what I can do with at-home pull-up bars.

For example, there is often an issue with space to do more advanced pull-ups, like kipping and toe-to-bar pullups.

Or maybe, I want to turn my pull-up bar into a ring station.

Not a problem with the P-4 pull-up bar.

Because the P-4 is built with great depth from the wall, you can do all the same pull-ups you can do at your local gym right at home, as well as set up a ring station.

Score.

Additionally, when it comes to durability, you won’t find a better option than Rogue.

This 52-foot-wide bar is made with high-quality 11-gauge steel, which is great for preventing wear and tear.

And let’s say you want to go crazy with your at-home gym and add a pull-up bar that’s 20-30 feet in length.

This is the pull-up bar that can do it.

You would do this by adding more brackets, spaced 3-4 feet apart, and then go to your local hardware store to purchase a 20 foot piece of pipe.

So not the most practical feature for most, but still a cool feature.

On top of that, you can situate this bar either horizontally from your wall or vertically from your ceiling, making it the most adaptable option on our list.

Next, let’s discuss the amount of space you need to install this option. 

The P-4 option is ideal for ceilings 8-9.5 ft high or if you have a spot on your wall that allows 3 feet of space from the wall (I show images below to show what I mean).

If space is a problem for you and you want something more compact, Rogue also has a P-3 version that takes up less space that may be better suited for you. 

So what’s the difference between the P-3 and P-4 pull-up bars?

The P-4 option extends 8 inches further from the wall and is 8 inches higher in height than the P-3 option. While this is great for giving flexibility to do more advanced pull-ups like the ones mentioned above (i.e. kippings and toe-to-bars), it takes a good amount of space.

  • P-3 = smaller bar with less depth from the wall (takes up less space)
  • P-4 = bigger bar with more depth from the wall (takes up more space)

So are there any downsides to the P-3 and P-4 pull-up bars?

Yes and no.

For one, it doesn’t come with mounting hardware, which includes the basic tools, like bolts, nuts, washers, a drill, a socket wrench, and a tape measure.

However, if you have all the tools, this shouldn’t be a problem. And if you don’t, you’ll have to make one little trip to your hardware store.

Secondly, this pull-up bar is not the cheapest on the list. (If you are looking for the best budget option, check out our #2 option on the list.)

But when you consider the quality and versatility you get with Rogue, it is well worth the price.

If you are looking for a great budget pull-up bar, I LOVE the HD Multi-Grip Bar from Titan Fitness.

At just $79, this is without question the most affordable option on our list. 

But it does come with caveats. 

The welding, while sturdy, isn’t the most aesthetically appealing, the Titan logo is literally a cheap sticker, and it can be a HUGE pain to install. 

So… what does this mean for you?

If you want something that is top-notch quality that looks nice and is easy to install (and you’re okay paying a little more), it’s really a no-brainer: you have to go with Rogue at our #1 option.

However, if you’re looking purely for functionality at a price you can’t beat, and don’t mind a little challenge with the install, Titan is an amazing option. 

Personally, this is my go-to on this list, but I have many friends who won’t go near Titan because of the reasons I mentioned.

Like the Titan Multi-Grip bar, if you want all the different pull-up variations and extra bar exercises at your disposal, this one from Rep is great. 

Off the bat, some things I like include:

  • Make with 11-gauge steel: In other words, the steel is sturdy and will last a really long time
  • 500-pound weight capacity
  • Aesthetically pleasing: Has a nice powder coat finish

The bolting width is 48 inches — each bolt is spaced out 48 inches from the left bracket to the right — while the bar’s diameter is 1.25 inches, making it comfortable to grip.

The thicker the diameter of the bar, the tougher it is to wrap your fingers around. However, if the diameter is too thin, the grip is uncomfortable, your nails are digging into your palms, and it might not have a good weight capacity. 

This bar’s 1.25-inch diameter is the sweet spot, offering both comfort and support as you rep out your pull-ups.

The depth of the bar from the wall is 21.5 inches, making it comparable to the Rogue P-3. 

So while you might not be able to kip with your pull-ups — i.e. swing your legs underneath to give you momentum with each pull-up rep — you can do a lot of other stuff with the multi-grip functionality.

When it comes to installation, this one comes with vague instructions, which can be annoying if you’re not well versed in installing a pull-up bar. 

All in all, I would put this as a middle ground between Rogue and Titan in regards to price and quality. 

Not my top choice, but not a bad option.

What Are Wall-Mounted Pull-Up Bars?

The name gives it away. They are horizontal bars that you can mount to walls or ceilings. This bar is typically used for all sorts of exercises, including hanging knee or leg raises, chin-ups, windshield wipers, and the classic pull-ups.

Getting a wall-mounted pull-up bar for yourself is a fantastic functional component to your overall calisthenics bodybuilding routine.

Benefits of Using Pull-Up Bars

  • Versatile Piece of Equipment: A pull-up bar can help you perform numerous exercises, not just pull-ups. You can do hanging knee or leg raises, chin-ups, one-arm chin-ups, lever raises, muscle-ups, and Australian/horizontal pull-ups with a simple horizontal bar that is load-bearing.
  • Conserves Space: Not only is the bar itself compact — somewhere between 30 inches and 60 inches — but you can put it above doorways or in corners. This keeps you from smacking your head on the bar while giving yourself enough space to conquer those reps. (Just make sure you have enough headspace above the bar. What to Look For in a Wall-Mounted Pull-Up Bar

How do you select a wall-mounted pull-up bar? Well, there are characteristics you must look for in order to get a good value and a good workout at the same time:

  • Weight Capacity: You don’t want your pull-up bar snapping mid-rep. The bar must hold both your body weight and any additional weight you tack on. After that, tack on an extra 100 pounds; you’re going to keep adding weight to your body and the bar, so you want a lot of room for error. For a 180-pound person, look for a pull-up bar with a 300-pound weight capacity.
  • Bar Design/Grip Positions: You might want a variety in terms of grip. Therefore, look for a pull-up bar with two horizontal bars parallel to each other, with other bars connected between them at differing angles. Over a 14-month period, he logged more than 220,000 pull-ups, so saying he knows what makes a good pull-up bar is a gross understatement.

Both the new P4 and the old P3 pull up bars are easy to install. You can anchor them on studs or walls, depending on the space you have available in your home or around the house.

Durability and Reliability

An electric drill is all you need to install your pull up bar on wood studs. If you are thinking about this option, you are most likely installing it either in the basement or in the garage.

The rule of thumb here is to ensure there’s sufficient overhead clearance, especially if you love kipping pull-ups. There should be sufficient room under the bar as well as you can’t bend your knees as you would with regular pull-ups and you need more ground clearance as well.
