The Honda Pilot is a three-row mid-size crossover SUV that features a 3.5-liter, 280-horsepower, V6. All the power is channeled to the front or all four wheels via a 6-speed-automatic transmission. The upper-class Elite and Touring trims feature a 9-speed-automatic. The AWD system comes with torque vectoring which improves handling capabilities and provides modes for driving through mud, snow, and sand.

Honda also combines utility, safety, and style to give consumers a stress-free ride. The Pilot’s sheet metal saw a redesign last year. It’s now rounded and more organic. It blends well with the three-light side view and lower end. This produces a well-sculptured and elegant styling also seen in the Traverse, Rogue, and Santa Fe. The 2015 Honda Pilot had a plasticky and blocky design that wasn’t very appealing to the eye. The current model improves on its predecessor by including well-trimmed and finished materials.

The Pilot borrows a few design elements from the Accord and carries on the utility offered in the CR-V. The upper trims come with a larger touchscreen with the top-range models getting a glassy panel and panoramic roof. In all transmission options, the Pilot’s 262-pound-feet of torque and 280 horsepower can get the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in 7 seconds. Consumers also get to listen to some soft engine noises from the 3.5-liter V6. The lower Pilots come with a 6-speed-automatic transmission that’s quite composed compared to the 9-speed automatic. It angles away at sweeping speed and doesn’t yank brusquely like the latter. The 9-speed transmissions found in the Elite and Touring also suffer from random jolting shifts. They can, however, double-downshift with two left-paddle clicks. They also hold gears longer. The Pilot has new dampers and springs that feature dual-path shocks. With the help of the multi-link rear controls and the strut front, these help to maintain body motions while providing an excellent ride on crusty road bumps. The handling is, however, looser when compared to that of rivaling SUVs such as the Buick Enclave. There’s also suspension noise and less control in wheel snap-back motions.

The steering is also light, offering drivers very little feel of what’s happening on the ground. The AWD system helps to split power between the rear wheels. This enables the Pilot to have more grip in mucky and wet conditions. The axles turn to apply pressure on one or both of the rear wheels when necessary. The system responds quite fast and has sharp reflexes. The Honda Pilot also comes with traction management, a system that allows drivers to select modes in order to handle snow, sand, normal or muddy rides. A 7.3-inch ground clearance improves on the all-weather capability. The Pilot can also tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The 2018 Honda Pilot is a family hauler that packs a spacious interior and is built strong enough to handle all forms of off-roading. There’s enough comfort and luxury for all eight passengers. The only downsides are the overly-sensitive safety features and the shifty 9-speed transmission. It, however, remains to be a top choice in its class.

At Harry Houdini’s funeral, Broadway producers Charles Dillingham and Florenz Ziegfeld agreed to be pallbearers. As they hoisted the coffin out of the church, Dillingham said, “Ziggie, I bet you a hundred bucks he ain’t in here.”

So popular was our long-term Honda Pilot Touring 4WD that, during the summer vacation months, you could likewise bet that its keys weren’t hanging on the sign-out board but were, instead, somewhere out of state. We should have called it the Honda Houdini.

Our Pilot ($40,725 as tested) logged its requisite 40,000 miles in 53 weeks, during which spell its 250-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 was rarely cool. The Pilot visited Ohio, New Jersey, Minnesota, both ­Dakotas, Wisconsin, Minnesota, the Hershey swap meet, Yellowstone National Park, a Kruse auction, and Manhattan Island. It also carried maybe 350 pounds’ worth of camera and camping gear to Montana in support of our “The Hard Way to Hemingway” feature [December 2009].

In Big Sky country, the Pilot bumped its way along roughly 100 miles of Forest Service roads, where we failed to knock off the chin spoiler but repeatedly scraped the twin chrome exhaust tips while exiting gullies and washouts. We never fully tested its 19-inch wading potential, but, as capabilities go, it was comforting.

Honda has blessed the Pilot with practical design cues aplenty. There’s a useful storage bin beneath the rear third of the cargo bay, cleverly proportioned so that it can still be used when the third-row seats are upright. The backlight opens independently of the rear hatch, and its wiper sweeps about 80 percent of the glass. The IP gauges are paragons of clarity, although the 50 center-stack buttons, dials, and switches are daunting, especially the identical radio volume and tuning knobs, which are confusingly mounted directly atop one another. And here’s something you don’t often see: The automatic temperature control can be set as low as 58 degrees and as high as 86 degrees.

During its life with us, the Pilot was as reliable as congressional spending. It required routine servicing four times, for oil, tire rotation, a variety of inspections, one new cabin air filter, and, strangely, two fresh loads of rear differential lubricant. Those four stops cost $566. Along the way, we replaced the front-wiper-blade inserts ($10), and the V-6 consumed but a half quart of extracurricular oil. The lone item to malfunction was a two-inch plastic trim piece, which fell off during Week One, but we’ll be damned if we can find what it was attached to. Automobiles don’t get more reliable than that.

We did, however, experience a faint, intermittent pulsing through the brake pedal, as if one rotor were mildly warped. It never rose to any appreciable level of annoyance, and, in any event, the pulsing would reliably vanish just before each servicing.

Curiously, the Pilot’s gray leather seats, fore and aft, took on a somewhat disgusting beige patina of, oh, say, the towel that hangs above the french-fry vat at Irvel’s All-U-Can-Eat. This Honda’s leather has a pebbled surface, and the interstices between pebbles apparently are uniquely talented at collecting grime. We scrubbed the cushions first with Griot’s Interior Cleaner, then Armor All Multi-Purpose Auto Cleaner, then plain old Windex. Each worked equally well, which is to say not very. The seats still look as though they should be steam-cleaned with Clorox. In addition, the liftgate’s interior plastic panel appears to have been mauled by a wolverine wielding a cheese grater.

Otherwise, the seats in the Pilot approached perfection: firm but never confining, with an aggressive lower-back bolster much appreciated by the over-50 crowd. Our pilots piloted the Pilot on dozens of 10-to-12-hour slogs. For such spells, the seats drew nothing but praise, and, on at least two occasions, we loaded the vehicle to its eight-passenger capacity. Briefly.

Other complaints? Well, the Pilot’s V-6 produces less power than five of its close competitors, a trait that occasionally drew attention during passing maneuvers and on-ramp sprints. When new, the Pilot required 7.9 seconds to get to 60 mph; a year later, it was 0.2 second quicker. Editors who deployed the Pilot as a tow vehicle—trailer­ing, for instance, a 6-by-12-foot U-Haul box, a 600-pound catamaran, and a Honda S2000 race car—resigned themselves to leisurely motoring, with fuel economy dipping as low as 9 mpg.

The other major criticism was that the Acura MDX–based Pilot always felt, well, a little more truckish than SUVish. In part, that perception can be blamed on the slightly heavy steering. But around town, in particular, the Pilot felt a tad slow-witted, larger than its actual dimensions, and less than eager to make directional changes. Squirting in and out of holes in traffic—and zig­zagging through crowded parking lots—­required care and forethought.

There were also a few beefs about road noise. The Pilot’s firm suspension was adept at yielding to scabrous pavement, but the Michelin LTXs and the 17-inch wheels too audibly telegraphed their outrage with various ka-thunks and ker-blams. On the other hand, the knobby tires were terrific in the snow.

Few SUVs on the planet feel as solid as the Pilot. After 40,000 less-than-polite miles, absolutely nothing rattled, squeaked, or chafed. The chassis was ever taut and tied down. The unibody felt bolted, welded, glued, buttressed, riveted, and crossbraced unto invincibility. This SUV gives you the feeling that nothing will ever break.

Despite Honda’s cylinder-deactivation system, our overall fuel economy was 18 mpg, 1 mpg worse than we observed in a 400-hp Porsche Panamera S. This is one weighty, pug-nosed machine—at 4688 pounds, it’s 287 pounds heavier than, say, the last Toyota Highlander we tested—and at highway speeds it always felt as if it were pushing a ton of air. What’s more, two editors were disappointed that the cylinder-deactivation system was less than transparent, “offering a lumpy response when toeing into the throttle.” And another noted that, at 38,000 miles, “the powertrain has loosened up such that transitions between the torque converter being locked or unlocked and between cylinder-deactivation modes are now far less subtle and more easily felt.”

Overall, the Pilot proved to be dead reliable and steadfast, with disciplined tracking and minimal body roll. It was an affable long-distance people mover for vacations and your best ally during those predawn commutes in winter’s worst slop. Said our Tony Swan, “It makes me wonder why anyone would pay extra for an Acura MDX.”

This latest-gen Pilot emerged victorious in a 700-mile comparison test in November 2008. After 40,000 bonus miles, it’s still clutching the gold medal.

Playing both sides against the middle is always a risky proposition. But what else can an automaker do when loyal buyers of its popular midsize crossover utility vehicle say they want more SUV style and ruggedness but additional car-like comforts? And demand improved interior packaging without compromising garageability? And want better performance plus increased fuel economy? Oh, yes, and how about adding a premium version with an extra dollop of aspirational luxury? If you're Honda, apparently you just say "okay" and pull the wraps off of the second-generation Pilot.

The Pilot's evolutionary journey involved every facet of the new package. For 2009, the lineup includes LX, EX, the leather-swathed EX-L, and the new, range-topping Touring model, all with standard seating for eight and in front-drive or all-wheel-drive availability. We recently drove several preproduction examples to see how well Team Honda has managed to orchestrate this critical transition game.

In an effort to amp up its SUV cues, the Gen II Pilot got a taller, more-angular front clip accented by a bold brushed-aluminum grille and larger, more powerful headlamps. Despite gaining that extra leading edge and retaining its cargo-friendly squared-off tail, a more effective chin spoiler configuration and cleaner underbody detailing actually helped trim drag numbers by two percent. The Pilot's incremental expansion program also added 2.9 inches to the length and wheelbase, made it 1.0 inch wider and nearly an inch taller. Collectively, the changes upped cabin volume by 4.1 cubic feet.

Although sharing basic design elements with its Acura MDX cousin, the Pilot's redrawn structure is largely unique from the A-pillar back. Like all new Hondas, it incorporates the firm's impact-mitigating/dissipating Advanced Compatibility Engineering construction. Equally important, the high-strength-steel content in the unit body jumped from 13 to 52 percent -- the most in any current Honda -- which contributed to a 25-percent gain in bending stiffness and 41-percent-more torsional rigidity. This ultra-stout foundation anchors a revamped suspension that brings lighter, more aluminum-intensive hardware, 1.4/1.1-inch wider front/rear track dimensions, recalibrated geometry, improved isolation characteristics, and bigger, more efficient ABS discs. Larger 17-inch wheels with upsized 245/60 tires deliver greater on-road grip and superior off-road durability, while a new Hill Start Assist feature joins the already-standard Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control.

Inside, this ground-bound space ship offers better accommodations across the board. Its well-formed front buckets gain an extra 20 mm of seat travel, and the driver's perch power-adjusts on all but the LX. The Pilot's pilot also benefits from a steering column that now tilts and telescopes, a shift lever repositioned from column to dash for easier use, and highly legible LED-illuminated 3D-look analog gauges. We did find the Pilot's new center stack layout a trifle busy, especially in Touring trim, which also includes the new hands-free navigation system. No such issues with the superbly redesigned center console that provides twice the capacity of any competitor's, multiple bins, supersize cupholders, 12V powerpoints-even an iPod-friendly USB port and 115V outlet in the Touring. The upgraded climate-control system also merits kudos. Dual-zone in LX but tri-zone in all others, it delivers 25-percent-quicker rear cool-downs and adds an automatic cabin humidity control that prevents window fogging.

Back in second- and third-tier land, the Pilot's 60/40 split/folding bench seats gain 1.1 and 1.9 inches of legroom, respectively. While row two retains 3.0 inches of basic fore/aft adjustability, the subtle stretching program expanded its "walkthrough" spec, which eases access to the wayback spot. Still best for a trio of younger folk, the innermost sanctum now truly is capable of carrying two average adults in reasonable comfort.

Even with eight up, Honda's new hauler boasts a class-leading 20.8 cubic feet of rear stow room, including a 2.8-cubic-foot concealed underfloor bin. Those figures rise to 47.7/87.0 cubic feet with one or both back rows flopped. Loading chores are simplified by a redesigned tailgate that includes a flip-up glass element and raises/lowers at the touch of a button on the Touring. Need to tote a posse of preschoolers? The new Pilot has upper/lower LATCH points in all three second-row seating spots plus an extra kid-parker hold-down in row three. Also in the house are front, front-side, and side-curtain airbags.

One engine now fits all Pilot variants: a purpose-tuned version of the 3.5-liter SOHC i-VTEC V-6 introduced in the 2008 Accord. Besides meeting more stringent ULEV-II emissions standards, the latest tri-mode version of Honda's Variable Cylinder Management system permits it to operate on three, four, or all six cylinders, depending on load. As with original two-stage V-6 previously used only on front-drive Pilots, it's packaged with a vibration-damping Active Control Engine Mount and delivers seamless intermodal transitions. Pony count is 250 compared with 244 in 2008 and its 253 pound-feet of torque tops last year's count by 13 twist units. While that latter commodity now peaks at a somewhat heady 4800 rpm, a dual-stage intake manifold and variable valve timing and lift keeps over 90 percent of it on call from 2000-6000 rpm. Equally critical, this slick V-6 thrives on regular unleaded gas.

Although the Pilot's smooth-shifting electronically controlled automatic still has only five speeds, Honda widened the ratio spread effectively enough to help a slightly heavier (42-103-pound) package upgrade its EPA numbers. Front-drivers net 17/23-city/highway mpg while AWD Pilots are now rated at 16/22 mpg-up from the previous 16/22- and 15/20-mpg stats. Tow ratings are 3500 pounds for FWD and a now-unrestricted 4500 pounds for AWD models and all variants also now come with an integrated Class III hitch and heavy-duty cooling packages. Despite its lack of a low range, the available Variable Torque Management (VTM-4) AWD system does function like a conventional locking rear differential. That, coupled with the Pilot's improved approach/departure angle specs, should grant access to-and egress from-even more challenging soft-roading venues. For pavement people, VTM-4's near-instantaneous torque-transferring capabilities simply impart a more confident feel in rain or snow conditions.

Formal testing on production vehicles may yield a minor surprise or two, but our first encounter with these proto Pilots confirmed that Honda has redefined an already capable package in ways that should spike its desirability index with both core and conquest buyers. It's still no MDX; but those who genuinely prefer comfortable, controlled cruising to high-intensity corner-carving will love the 2009 Pilot's even more surefooted demeanor and improved ride. Despite the added people/cargo space, a slightly smaller turning circle improves its close-quarters maneuverability. And in a time when rising fuel prices loom ominously over all players in its segment, the Pilot's powertrain enhancements deliver tangible economy and emissions benefits. As for the ultimate bottom line, projected pricing of $27,000-$40,000 extend its already well-established value position -- and should further substantiate the Pilot's best-in-class claims against key crossover foes like the Buick Enclave, Ford Taurus X, and Toyota Highlander when it arrives in dealerships in June.
