Trick Drums

Trick Drums Predator

Predator Remote Hi Hat – Trick’s Predator Remote Hi-Hat is what’s next in the evolution of cable driven hi-hats. The Predator was designed to allow drummers to place remote hi-hat cymbals in the most convenient and comfortable playing position without sacrificing performance or feel. The issue with other brands of remote hi-hats is that they noticeably dampen and slow the cymbals’ rebound. Trick has all but eliminated that sluggish, dampened feel with our unique and patent-pending design.

With never-before-seen cable-adjustment capabilities, the Predator lets the user align the cable for the most direct route to the cymbals—thus eliminating curves and bends which is what dampens and slows the device.

Yamaha HS-740A Hi-Hat Stand Overview - Full Compass

The Remote Hi-Hat

Backstory: I recently suffered an injury to the tendons along my breastbone, that unfortunately, take a long time to heal since breathing makes that whole area move anyway. So right now the doctor has me taking ibuprofen and taking it easy, but he did recommend maybe not crossing my arm across my chest like I do when I play hi-hat. A friend of mine loaned me an arm to mount hi-hats on and I put it directly in front of me like Bill Bruford. And oddly enough, I loved it. And while injured, it allows me to play when I have to.

So I'm wondering about getting a Pearl RH2000 cable hat (since I have the opportunity to do so). Does anyone here have direct experience with this hi-hat? Any pros or cons? I realize it will be a different feel, and I can probably adjust to it, but I wanted to find out if anyone has any experience with it already. I've even discovered that the "Bruford Way of Playing" with hi-hat in the center, and the toms set-up like he did is really easy for me to play and is quite inspiring. The only thing that's a little challenging is the standard rock 'n' roll descending tom fill - which I hardly do with the two toms I have. My new kit will have four toms, so I will definitely start playing like Bruford just because of the ease factor. I love it!

I contacted Bill Bachman about the Remote Speedy hat, but unfortunately, they are in a terminal holding pattern as the new company gets them started up and there are none available right now. I have a few gigs already coming up in April (along with a show choir gig in Chicago) so I need to get into one soon. I told Bill I'd still get one of his when they're available, but the Pearl I have access to right now.

Any remote hi-hat fans out there? Was your adjustment difficult?
