The best mini-ITX case in 2021

The best Mini-ITX cases are for small-form, but big-idea PC building. They are cute, efficient, and pack in deceptively large amounts of power. A mini-ITX case might also help maximize your desk space, while keeping your precious gaming desktop off the dusty ground.

There's something about cramming an entire gaming PC into a teeny chassis and making it work that feels super satisfying. And it's a common misconception that you can only fit mini-components into a mini-ITX case. The truth is the best mini-ITX cases, like the ones listed here, can accommodate most full-size graphics cards and high-end CPUs.

If you plan to pick up an an Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti, or one of AMD's RX 6000-series cards, just double check the size before you buy, just to be on the safe side. Some of those cards may require additional mounting brackets too, depending on the case.

We spent some time jamming components into a wealth of mini-ITX cases in order to  test airflow, cable routing and support for motherboards and radiators, among other things. Keep in mind those listed below might be a bit hard to find, so be sure to bookmark this page and check in regularly.

If you're more of a 'go big or go home' PC builder, check out our favorite full-tower PC  and mid-tower PC cases.

Reasons to buy

+Great cooling support+Integrated RGB LED strip+CAM-powered Smart Device V2

Reasons to avoid

-CAM isn't everyone's favourite software

The NZXT H210i is essentially a tiny version of our favorite mid-tower, the H710i. Built to only support Mini-ITX builds, the H210i does a great job fitting a high-end system into a compact, minimalistic package.

Like its bigger brother, the case comes equipped with NZXT's smart hub and includes two fans and one RGB LED strip. Available for around $130, the H200i is the same price as most mid-sized towers, but we still think it's worth it. The case has many features you'd find in a high-end mid-tower, including excellent cable management and a full-sized tempered glass panel.

Thanks to NZXT's CAM-powered Smart Device V2, the H210i features intelligent digital fan control and offers plenty of room to expand the built-in RGB lighting with additional strips. With added support for liquid cooling and large graphics cards, the H210i is the perfect solution for those who want to make a small but powerful gaming PC.

The best high-end Mini-ITX case

Specifications

Dimensions: 273 x 216 x 356 mm

Weight: 6.9 kg

Radiator Support: 120 mm

I/O Ports: 1x Audio/Mic, 2x USB 3.0, Wireless Qi charger

Drive Bays: 2x 2.5-inch, 2x 3.5-inch

Reasons to buy

+Integrated wireless Qi charger+Built-in 600W PSU +Very compact

Reasons to avoid

-Limited size for expansion, support

When it comes to innovative case design, InWin frequently pushes the boundaries and creates some remarkable cases. The latest A1 Mini-ITX tower is one of those cases with its sleek, compact design and innovative feature set.

The A1 features a preinstalled and pre-cable managed 600W power supply that eliminates one of our least favorite things about building in small ITX cases—trying to find and fit a PSU. It provides just enough power for most ITX builds with discrete graphics cards. One of the lovely modern touches is the integrated wireless Qi charger at the top of the case that allows you to charge your phone effortlessly.

Unlike some of the other ITX cases in this list, the A1 can't support big powerful builds with large radiators and lots of storage. It's still capable of being the basis of plenty of decent builds, though.

3. Corsair Crystal 280X RGB

The best compact case for big builds

Specifications

Form Factor: Micro-ATX tower

Motherboard Support: Micro-ATX, Mini-ITX

Dimensions: 398 x 276 x 351 mm

Weight: 7.1 kg

Radiator Support: 120 mm, 140 mm, 240 mm, 280 mm

I/O Ports: 1x Audio/Mic, 2x USB 3.0

Drive Bays: 3x 2.5-inch, 2x 3.5-inch

Reasons to buy

+Versatile interior layout+Pre-installed addressable RGB fans+Spacious dual chamber design

Reasons to avoid

-On the larger side

This guide is specifically for Mini-ITX builds, but Corsair's micro-ATX Crystal Series 280X is such a great case we just had to mention it. The cube-like tower features a dual-chamber design that makes a very efficient space for easy cable management and installation. The 280X RGB comes with two preinstalled addressable RGB fans and a Lighting Node PRO controller.

As with the other Crystal Series cases, the 280X features three smoked tempered glass panels that allow you to easily show off your RGB interior. The case offers a wide assortment of cooling options with support for radiators up to 280mm in length.

Despite its micro-ATX classification, we would highly recommend the 280X RGB for both mATX and micro-ITX builds. The spacious interior and versatile dual-chamber design make it one of the most compact cases out there. It isn't much larger than other Mini-ITX cases, so it still looks fantastic wherever you place it.

Reasons to buy

+Slim design works everywhere+Excellent water cooling support+Vertical or horizontal orientation

Reasons to avoid

- Pretty big

When it comes to PC cases, it's incredible to see how far we've come along from the annoying old beige boxes of the early 90s. Gamers and enthusiasts are now proud to display their systems on their desks. And while there have been a few options that are great for the living room, Phanteks topples the competition with the Evolv Shift and its larger brother, the Evolv Shift X.

We were surprised to discover how roomy and straightforward it was to build despite a small footprint measuring just 6.7 x 18.5 x 10.8 inches. Phanteks accomplished this feat by inverting the motherboard and including a reversible GPU mount that allows you to install your graphics card vertically behind the motherboard. This means the "rear" I/O is moved to the top of the case, hidden away with a door that has a nifty RGB LED in it.

The Phanteks Evolv Shift may not be the smallest ITX case for the living room, but it is by far our favorite. A stunning exterior combined with a well-engineered interior makes it the perfect case to bring 4K PC gaming to your living room. And if you want to take things one step further with custom liquid cooling, the larger Evolv Shift X offers even more bang for your buck.

5. Cooler Master Elite 110

The best budget Mini-ITX case

Specifications

Form Factor: ITX tower

Motherboard Support: Mini-ITX

Dimensions: 260 x 208 x 280 mm

Weight: 2.65 kg

Radiator Support: 120 mm

I/O Ports: 1x Audio/Mic, 2x USB 3.0

Drive Bays: 4x 2.5-inch, 3x 3.5-inch

Reasons to buy

+Compact and lightweight+Lots of storage support

Reasons to avoid

-Simplistic design

If you're looking to build a simple, compact gaming system or HTPC, Cooler Master's Elite 110 is as accessible as it gets. It may not have all of the bells and whistles of the other ITX options mentioned in this guide, but it certainly gets the job done.

When you boil it down to basics, this case is about as necessary as you can get. While feature reduction has its ups and downs, this case minimizes the negative and offers one of the smallest form factors we've seen.

A smart interior layout with a vertical GPU mount allows you to fit in this little package quite a bit. The Elite 110 supports a broad range of graphics cards up to 8.3-inches long and even leaves enough room for 120mm all-in-one liquid coolers. Unlike other small form factor cases, this one supports most regular ATX-sized PSUs. At a mere $40, it's straightforward for us to recommend the Elite 110 for builders on a budget.

Best mini-ITX case FAQ

What are the main considerations when thinking about a small form factor build?

There's a lot to consider when choosing a Mini-ITX case. Space will be scarce, as you won't have room for multiple graphics cards or a stack of SSDs. Proper cable management is going to be your friend through the entire process, and you'll need to be careful when it comes to component selection too. If this is your first build, a mid-tower case will give you more room to work with—but that's cheating.

If you want to build a budget gaming PC, you're better off with a full-size ATX motherboard, as they are much cheaper, but a compact Mini-ITX case with an included PSU can save you a few pennies. Think about the lifespan of your components, though, as you'll have much less room to expand in the future. If you've got some cash to spend, though, consider liquid cooling to address any thermals issues that come with working with a smaller case.

We want to note that your choice of graphics card is far more critical with a Mini-ITX build. It's not just about length either, as cooling is a far greater concern when dealing with cramped interiors. Generally speaking, Mini-ITX is one of the few times where using a GPU with a blower cooler is often the best decision. Unless you get a bigger mATX case with more airflow, you want your GPU to vent all that heat outside the case.

A little research should eliminate most potential problems and ensure your machine can handle demanding games and storage expansion for the next few years.

Why should I choose a Mini-ITX case?

When it comes to building PCs, the Mini-ITX form factor is where we've seen most design innovations.

While a Mini-ITX build takes a little more patience and experience to do well, the rewards are much higher. Having a small, clean build in an interestingly compact package makes you feel good. Mini-ITX rigs make it easier to take your platform to a LAN party or play PC games in the living room (if that's your thing).

Veteran gaming PC builders looking for a challenge might want to take a crack at seeing what they can cram into a Mini-ITX case and keep everything running without throttling.

Big PC power really can come in small packages.

Dave has been gaming since the days of Zaxxon and Lady Bug on the Colecovision, and code books for the Commodore Vic 20 (Death Race 2000!). He built his first gaming PC at the tender age of 16, and finally finished bug-fixing the Cyrix-based system around a year later. When he dropped it out of the window. He first started writing for Official PlayStation Magazine and Xbox World many decades ago, then moved onto PC Format full-time, then PC Gamer, TechRadar, and T3 among others. Now he's back, writing about the nightmarish graphics card market, CPUs with more cores than sense, gaming laptops hotter than the sun, and SSDs more capacious than a Cybertruck.

Building my NEW PC in CRYSTAL 280x... REVIEW { HINDI }

Corsair’s New Crystal 280X Case Looks Much Better In Person

To be honest, we weren’t all that wowed by Corsair’s Crystal 280X chassis when we first saw it in press release form. Images of the empty case especially don’t do this Micro-ATX/Mini-ITX chassis justice.

Available in either white or black, with RGB fans and a controller ($160) or without ($110), it’s a short, wide case with tempered glass on the top, front, and sides. In other words, it’s a glass-and-RGB box, like seemingly every other case we’ve seen in the last couple years.

But the Crystal 280X’s extra width lets you hide your power supply, storage (up to two 3.5" and three 2.5" drives), and unsightly wires in a chamber on the right side of the case. That leaves the pretty parts like your motherboard, cooler, and graphics card(s) on full display. To be clear, this is nothing new either.

And maybe it was just Corsair’s build, and the pair of LL120 RGB fans included with the RGB model, all synced up with the company’s iCUE software. But the finished system on display at Corsair’s Computex suite left us feeling bad about our initial lack of enthusiasm when we first heard about the Corsair Crystal 280X. It may not be a game-changer in the design department, but Corsair has managed to refine the current case trends into something that looks surprisingly attractive when built out, especially with the help of some RGB strips (not included).

If you’re looking for a compact case to properly show off your next build, you just might want to put the Corsair Crystal 280X on your short list. It’s available now, and to make sure your part list is compatible with the case, here’s a list of specs direct from Corsair.

Build 280x corsair series crystal

Newegg

Pros: I tried out the black RGB version of this case with both ITX and micro-ATX motherboards. Oddly enough, the ITX build was the more challenging, though I’ll get into that in the cons section. I like the concept of compartmentalizing the components as this case has done. It makes for a very wide case but on the plus side there are no hard drive bays blocking airflow to your graphics card, and hiding away the PSU hides away the cable mess. If you’re looking at this case, then you are looking for some serious bling… and it delivers. The light loop (LL) fans look fantastic. The customization combinations using Corsair’s iCUE software are mind boggling. If you want even more bling, the included fan hub can handle up to six of Corsair’s RGB fans. By the way, the case can house seven 120/140 mm fans: 2 in the front, two on the top, two on the bottom (ITX builds only), and then there’s a spot near the hard drives on the non-windowed side of the case. Oh, and every single one of these locations has magnetic dust filters. This case is quite the deal with the bundled two Corsair LL 120mm fans ($35 each), Corsair Lighting Node Pro ($60), and Corsair fan hub ($10). Doing the math that’s $140 MSRP of extras compared to the $50 premium over the non-RGB version of this case. That’s value right there.

Cons: Now, I have gushed about this case for a bit. However I do have a laundry list of cons to cover. This case has room for a number of improvements that I must point out to help fellow shoppers. Most egregious is the graphic card retention mechanism. There’s no way to securely install your video card other than the case clamping system. When clamped onto my particular card there was an awful lot of looseness in the card. I discovered how much of a problem this was when I first tried to boot after completing my build. With the side window off, the system would successfully boot. When the window was on I would get no display. Further investigation discovered that since the main chamber of this case is a bit narrow, the external power cable plugged into my video card was being pushed in by the window when it was installed. This combined with a not so secure video card resulted in the card being unseated when the side was installed. I was able to solve this problem by seriously bending the thick GPU power cables down so they wouldn’t move the card when pressed by the side panel. Next con is Corsair pre-managing the case cables. That sounds like a good idea, but using zip ties instead of twist ties is a semi-permanent way to go about it. If you want the fans or any of the cables anywhere else but where Corsair put them, you’ll need to carefully cut the ties without damaging the cables. Some of the zip ties were very tight and had very little slack to insert a cutting tool. Next up, the USB cable for the Lighting Node Pro module was too short to reach the USB header on my ITX build. For my micro-ATX build the USB headers are on the right side of the motherboard and that works great for this setup. ITX motherboards like to put USB headers at the top and the motherboard. My solution was to detach the lighting module from the case side (it’s stuck on with adhesive tape) to allow the USB cable to reach the ITX USB header. I have two strikes against the thumb screws used to attach the glass panels on this case. Strike one is the thumbscrews are hard to grip and they thread very stiff in the tapped holes. Every single time I had to open this case up I would try to do it by hand, but eventually just grabbed a screwdriver to get the thumb screws to move. Strike two is the decision to have the thumb screw rubber grommets installed in the glass panels rather than have the grommets as part of the case, like competing cases have. Unless you have gravity working with you (case on its side), you have to carefully balance the glass while trying to thread the thumb screws into the holes. At the same time, you are trying not to drop the glass panel, scratch the glass panel, get fingerprints on the inside of the glass panel, etc. On the flip-side, when removing the glass panel it drops right off when the last screw pop out since it is completely suspended by the thumb screws, so be careful. The next con is about heatsink clearance. Call me old fashioned but I don’t have and AIO cooler and still use a tower cooler. 150mm headspace is all you get. This case is definitely intended for 240/280 mm radiators. The cooler I use is 152mm tall and sure enough it touches the side panel and there is the smallest 1-2 mm gap in the side panel, though it is secured well enough for me since all screws are threaded and it's not even noticeable. The point I’m trying to make is even though this is a very wide case, it really only has 150mm clearance. The final con is there is no HDD light on this case. I guess it’s not really a con but rather an amusing footnote because the case instead comes with a power LED. With this case being lit up with a complete RGB light show, it’s pretty obvious if the computer is powered on or not but they have added a power LED just in case you’re not sure (well… it does help you find the power button in the dark). Also, you could always use the power LED wires to the HDD activity header, so it’s not really a con.

Overall Review: Even though my cons seem to overpower my pros, it’s actually quite the opposite. This case is so well built and the layout is so good I’m not docking any eggs. It really is a nice case and once built is quite eye catching. Some extra info for those of you considering this case: It has a drive cage for three 2.5 hard drives and two 3.5 hard drives, as stated in the specifications. What you may not know is that the trays for the 3.5 hard drives has the mounting holes to secure 2.5 hard drives so you can actually have five 2.5 drives, or just remove the 2.5 cage and use the 3.5 cage which has convenient exterior access for your 2.5 drives. I was clear about hating the thumb screws on this case. Corsair was kind enough to include alternative low profile allen head screws to replace them and an allen key to secure them. Since I pretty much required a tool to remove the thumb screws anyway I opted to swap them out for the allen screws since they look better in my opinion. You’ll want to invest in some glass cleaner for your project, because this thing is a fingerprint magnet. One of the challenges of building in this case is trying to avoid fingerprints on the inside of the glass panels since you must disassemble to wipe them off.
