Washington County Marriage License

Marriage license applications can be obtained from the County Clerk's Office. You can complete the Marriage License application form online before coming to the office.   If you apply online, you will still need to visit the Clerk's Office to complete the license process.  Both applicants must be present to sign the license at the time of issuance. Residents and nonresidents are eligible to apply for a marriage license.

The marriage ceremony must be performed within 60 days of the issuance of the license. After the marriage ceremony, the marriage license must be returned to the County Marriage License Bureau.

When applying for a marriage license both spouses must apply in person. If one or both of the applicants are minors, under 18 years of age may need parental consent.

All applicants must present the following:

One (1) valid identification is required with the applicant's picture, signature, and date of birth, a Driver License issued by any state in the U.S., Passport, a U.S. Military ID, Alien Registration Card, or State ID issued by DMV are acceptable. Anyone issued a Social Security Card must provide their number. All U.S. citizens and residents must provide their Social Security Number. Non-U.S. Citizens may provide one of the following valid Identifications:  Alien Registration Card, US State issued Driver's License, or Passport if they do not have a Social Security Number. If either applicant has been previously married, the exact date of the last divorce, death or annulment must be provided.  If the divorce took place in the County go to the Family Online Case Search and view the docket link for final judgment date which is date of divorce.

Obtaining a Marriage License In Person

Both parties must appear in person to complete the marriage license application, pay the fee, and sign the form. The application can be filled out at a computer kiosk in our lobby or you can fill it out online before you come in.

After you have completed the application, both parties must come to the Recording office to pay the fee and complete the process. Be sure to bring a copy of the confirmation page with the submission ID.

Obtaining a Marriage License by Mail

To obtain a marriage license application by mail, please send a self-addressed stamped envelope to the address below or call the Recording office at 503-846-8752.

An application will be mailed to you. Fill out and sign the application and return it with your payment to the Recording office at the address below. Please be sure to allow at least three weeks before the ceremony to process the application. On approval we will send your license to you, normally within three (3) days of receipt.

Fee

The fee is $60.00. We accept cash, checks, money order, debit & most credit cards. Debit & credit cards will be processed with an additional convenience charge of 2.45% (minimum $1.50).

After You Receive Your Marriage License

The issued license becomes effective in three (3) days. You have 60 days to have a ceremony performed anywhere in Oregon, and this deadline cannot be extended. Your officiant will need to sign the license and return it to the county within five (5) working days. Marriage license fees are not refundable. If you do not use the license in the time frame allowed, you will lose your fees and must purchase a new license.

Who May Perform A Marriage?

  • Judges (see the following link for information about judges who perform marriages:  https://www.courts.oregon.gov/courts/washington/go/Pages/Marriage.aspx
  • County Clerks or their Deputies within the appointing county (Note:  Washington County clerks and deputies do NOT perform marriages)
  • Justices of the Peace
  • Persons appointed to perform the ceremony by a congregation (i.e., ministers, pastors, priests, rabbis) or secular organizations (effective January 1, 2018)

How to Obtain A Certified Copy Of Your Marriage License

If you did not pre-order a certified copy of your marriage license when the license was issued, you must request a certified copy in writing. Please include both parties' names, the date of the marriage, and a contact number. Mail the request to the address below. Certified copies are $7.75 each.
