TP-Link Deco X60 Wi-Fi 6 review: Budget mesh Wi-Fi

TP-Link-Deco-Xmesh-Wi-Fi.jpg

Wi-Fi 6 was finalized in , and products have finally come to market. It is supposed to be faster, which you might notice if you have a Wi-Fi 6 file server.

Wi-Fi 6 's major benefit is that it more gracefully supports many devices. At my house, there are 3 Roku TVs, 4 Macs, 4 iPads, 3 Apple Watches, 3 HomePods, 3 iPhones, and 2 Apple TVs, all fed by Mb/sec cable. Only two of those devices support Wi-Fi 6 today, but that number will at least triple over the next year. Then there are the devices, usually more iPhones and iPads, that friends bring over.

Even though the single modem/router from the cable company offered what systems showed to be sufficient Wi-Fi signal strength throughout a sq. ft. home, installation of the TP-Link M4 mesh made a huge difference. Drop-outs, niggling delays, streaming stutters, and other annoying first-world problems pretty much ceased. So did the $10/month bill for the inadequate modem/router after I bought a compatible modem.

Then I added the newer X It is compatible with the M4 - you can continue using M4 nodes for non-Wi-Fi 6 coverage, and life got a little better. Rebooting the cable modem and the M4 mesh was a monthly occurrence. Since adding the X60, we go for months without that bit of cruft clearance.

I liked the TP-Link so much I began recommending it to friends. So now I've installed three mesh systems.

TP-Link Deco X60 Wi-Fi 6

What I've learned

tp-link-deco-xmesh-wifireview.jpg

Installs take about half an hour, much of which is taken up with adding devices to the network. I have little patience with fiddly tech, and I found the install process straightforward.

The biggest change since my first mesh is that TP-Link removed the irksome requirement for cellphone coverage to install their routers. Not a big city problem, but here in rural Arizona, cell coverage -- like vaccinations -- cannot be assumed.

Since my friends are not techies, I've also sampled TP-Link's remote management capabilities. The handiest is remote firmware updates, but a number of other features can be managed, such as beamforming, port forwarding, and DHCP settings.

$ at Amazon

The take

One important thing has changed since I last reviewed the TP-Link mesh routers: the competitive landscape. The prices of competing mesh systems from Google, Amazon, and others have come down, and it appears that TP-Link has raised some of their prices. Still, you can get into a TP-Link mesh for less than than the others, but the gap isn't as large as it was.

If you want Wi-Fi 6, though, prices start at about $ for a two or three node mesh. That's better than most of the competition.

But do you want Wi-Fi 6 NOW? Unless you've upgraded to Wi-Fi 6 systems, probably not. But, if, like me, more Wi-Fi 6 systems are in the offing, why wait?

I make a practice of staying away from devices and services offered by firms that package my info and sell it. As near as I can tell, TP-Link doesn't vacuum up user data for resale. So even though the pricing is a tad less competitive than it was, I still prefer the TP-Link business model.

Looking for a cost-effective Wi-Fi 6 mesh? Consider the TP-Link Deco X20 or X60 systems. They've worked well for me.

Comments welcome: What would you recommend?

What is Mesh WiFi?

Learn everything you need to know about a mesh WiFi network

Whole-Home Mesh WiFi

What is Mesh WiFi?

Deco Mesh routers around a house

Mesh WiFi is a whole home WiFi system built to eliminate dead zones and to provide uninterrupted WiFi throughout your home.

Mesh routers enable devices in your network to have faster speeds, greater coverage, and a more reliable connection. While traditional routers broadcast WiFi from a single point, mesh WiFi systems have multiple access points.

Benefits of a WiFi Mesh Network

Mesh WiFi is built for all types of homes specifically mid size and large homes that have suffer from weak or incomplete WiFi coverage. Usually when you experience dead zones or slow wifi, you might opt into a range extender but find that it doesn’t provide you with the fastest speeds or connectivity throughout your home. Whereas mesh wifi routers are built to fully cover large homes up to 6, sq. ft., with two stories or more, interior brick walls, or an unusual layout. With more family members being home, a typical wifi router will have issues with maintaining strong internet access to all devices like phones, computers, or tvs. With multiple mesh nodes, everyone can easily connect more smart home devices simultaneously without slowing down your wifi bandwidth.

They also represent a great option for people who are interested in a powerful WiFi system but don’t want to deal with the complicated setup and configuration that most regular routers come with.

Features of a Whole Home WiFi System

  • Mesh WiFi range in a home

One Network for Your Entire Home

Mesh technology is smart and intuitive, letting you stay online even if one of your mesh nodes fails. You can skip signing into a new network every time you go upstairs and stay connected to a single sturdy network no matter where you are.

  • Two Deco routers providing Mesh WiFi to multiple spots throughout the home

    Stable Long-Range Connectivity

With a mesh router, you can get a powerful and stable connection no matter where you are in your home. Because each mesh node piggybacks off the other nodes signal, you can get powerful WiFi whether you’re at the top of the stairs or the bottom of the basement.

  • Illustration showing the Deco app showing you where to place your router

    Easy Setup and Management

Most mesh routers on the market today come with easy network setup and management controls allowing you to toggle network settings, check speeds, and enact parental controls.

  • Mesh WiFi to multiple devices

    Control Your Smart Home

Mesh systems like our Deco M5 (3-Pack) or Deco X60 WiFi 6 are so advanced that they function as a WiFi router and a smart hub, connecting your Zigbee and WiFi devices and enabling you to manage all your connected smart devices through the Deco app.

Behind Mesh WiFi Network Technology

Deco diagram showing Deco products with Mesh WiFi capabilities

Mesh WiFi works by using two or more devices or “nodes” to create a secure and strong wifi network.

These nodes are important in efficiently delivering WiFi, as each node serves as a “daisy chain” for other nodes in the system. Even nodes that are furthest from the router can still deliver a strong signal. Nodes communicate with one another in order to determine the fastest band for your devices, and to reroute traffic in the event that one node fails with its self-healing technology.

What’s the difference between Mesh WiFi and a Range Extender?

Picture of a house without Mesh WiFiPicture of a house with Mesh WiFI

While mesh WiFi and Range extenders might appear to have the same functionality, there are some key differences.

Mesh technology is meant to cast the strongest wifi as you’re roaming room to room.

Range extenders require you to sign on to a new network manually in order to maintain a strong connection once you’re far enough away from your router.

Mesh WiFi is faster and more efficient at delivering a WiFi signal than a range extender. This technology has grown quickly and been the go-to for wifi routers for its long-range signal, ease of use, and quick setup. Check out TP-Link mesh wifi systems to see all Deco routers.

Q&A

Q1: What is the relationship between OneMesh™ and TP-Link Mesh?

A1: OneMesh™ is a trademark for all OneMesh™ products, while TP-Link Mesh is a mesh technology from TP-Link. OneMesh™ network works based on TP-Link Mesh Technology.

Q2: Which mode should I use on my wireless router or modem router for OneMesh™?

A2: Wireless Routers support OneMesh™ only on Router mode. Modem Routers support OneMesh™ on any operation mode.

Q3: How do I set up a OneMesh™ network for different types of devices?

A3: You can use a OneMesh™ Wireless Router or Modem Router with several sets of Range Extenders or Powerline Adapters to create a OneMesh™ network. Be aware, you cannot create a OneMesh™ network between two routers.

Q4: How to set up a mesh network when there are more than two repeaters joining into the network?

A4: Generally we suggest connecting all the repeaters to the router for better performance. Customers can also connect one repeater to another repeater which already gets connected to the router, however, we don’t recommend you to add more than two repeaters to one single link chain in consideration of the Wi-Fi quality.
