John deere mulching kit installation

John deere mulching kit installation DEFAULT

Mulch kits can give your John Deere tractor more value when mowing. Mulch kits generally include mulching blades and a mulching plug, along with necessary hardware for installation. The mulch blades chop grass clippings into smaller pieces than the standard blades, and those smaller pieces decompose faster and help return nutrients back into the soil, keeping your grass healthy. Continue reading to learn how to install a mulch kit on your John Deere tractor.

Before performing any maintenance on your John Deere tractor, refer to your owner’s manual for maintenance and safety information. Maintenance instructions vary by model. Depending on your model number, these instructions may vary.  Be sure to refer to your owner’s manual for detailed instructions.

To install a mulch kit on a John Deere tractor, begin by removing the mower blades. Use a Jungle Jack or other form of jack to lift the front of your mower to create space under the mower deck. Raise the deck to the highest setting. Remove the center holding nut from the mower blade with a wrench. Use a gloved hand to keep the blade from turning while removing the nut. Save the nut for installing the mulching blade. Repeat this blade removal step for the mower blade on the other side of the deck.

Now that the old blades have been removed, it’s time to replace them with the new blades included in the mulch kit. Place the center hole of the mulching blade over the mounting stud on the underside of the mower deck. Make sure the cutting end of the blade faces forward when spinning in a clockwise direction. Use your gloved hand to hold the blade in place while tightening the holding nut with your wrench. Repeat this step to install the mulching blade on the other side of the deck as well.

To install the mulch plug on your John Deere tractor, lift the discharge chute up. Place the mulch plug into the deck discharge chute opening with the carriage bolt threads facing upward.  Fit the mulch plug onto the mower deck lip and remove the tape from the metal deflector and discharge chute so that it falls into place. Insert the carriage bolt into the mounting hole on the lower left side of the mower deck. Tighten the locking wing nut.

You are now ready to use your John Deere tractor as a mulcher. In the future, if you want to mow without mulching, remove the mulch plug, and you will not need to change the blades.

Expert Advice

John Deere designed electric One-Touch MulchControl to help you quickly switch between side discharge mowing and mulching with the press of a button. This attachment is available for Accel Deep mower decks on John Deere X300 and X500 Select Series tractors.

Here’s how to install the One-Touch MulchControl.

Before performing any maintenance on your John Deere, refer to your operator’s manual. It lists required maintenance, safety information, and instructions for your machine. Maintenance instructions vary by model, so depending on your model our instructions may vary slightly.

Begin by parking your mower on a flat, level surface. Turn the engine off, allow it to cool, and set the deck down. Position the mower deck so you have access to both sides.

Take your One-Touch MulchControl kit and unbox all the pieces and parts.

Remove the mower blades by inserting a wood block between the blade and mower deck to prevent the blade from turning. Remove the bolt washer and blade. Repeat this on all blades.

Next, bolt the mulch gate stop plate under the deck and tighten the bolt.

Install the deflectors. Take the left deflector and attach it to the mower deck. Line up the split tab and then rotate the deflector until the top tabs slide over the baffles. Attach the lock nut on top of the deck.

Attach the right deflector to the deck. Make sure the mulch gate is outside the stop plate and align the deflector with the existing holes in the mower deck. Attach using a carriage bolt and lock nut and tighten.

Install the actuator bracket to the gauge wheel bracket and tighten. Make sure the mulch gate is in the closed position and install the pivot arm to the pivot shaft with the lock nut. Install the actuator assembly to the bracket with the pin and spring locking pin. Tighten the lock nuts and attach the right deflector to the deck baffle.

Next, install the spring between the pivot arm and the bushing on the tension arm. Install the harness clip on the right hand of the stock bracket.

Install the blades using a large washer and bolt. Make sure the cutting edge is facing toward the ground. Tighten using a torque wrench.

Install the deck back onto your mower. Raise or remove the hood. Disconnect the spark plugs and remove the whole plug from the dash panel. This will be replaced with a switch.

Install the relay block to dash support with a bolt and clamp-on nut. For machines with a carbon canister, attach the relay block with a cable tie clip.

Connect the wire harness under the dash to the switch on top of the dash. Insert the switch into the hole and make sure the switch snaps into place. Route the kit harness down the right side, following the main machine harness between the side panel and frame.

Attach the kit harness to the main machine harness with zip ties. Plug the male connector from the main machine harness into the female connector on the kit harness.

Attach the actuator harness to the main machine harness with the releasable clip throughout the actuator harness.

Plug the connector from the kit harness into the connector on the actuator harness. Reconnect the spark plugs and tuck the harnesses behind the side panel. Lower or reinstall the hood on your mower.

How to Install a Mulch Kit on a John Deere 42 Mower Deck

By Melissa Rae

The mulching kit for a John Deere 42-inch mower deck makes it possible to return nutrients to your lawn after cutting. The blades cut the grass finely without clumping and can help retain the moisture in your lawn. The 42-inch mulching kit fits on John Deere mower models X300, LT, LX and GX. The kit contains two mulching blades that replace the standard blades and a deflector cup that scatters the grass clippings.

Park the mower on a level surface and disengage the blades. Lock the mower deck into the highest position. Engage the parking brake. Turn off the engine and remove the key. Disconnect the negative battery cable or spark plug wire.

Place a block of wood between the blades and deck to keep the blades still while you work.

Remove the mower blades. For the X300 models, remove the nuts, using a wrench. Remove the beveled washers and blades. Alternatively, for the LT, LX and GX models, remove the bolts, using a wrench. Remove the washers, beveled washers and blades. Set the blades and components aside.

Rinse the mower deck thoroughly with a garden hose. Rinse or scrape any debris from the underside of the deck and the discharge chute. Dry it with towel.

Lift up the discharge chute and pull the metal deflector outward and upward. Secure the discharge chute and deflector in the upward position, using a piece of duct tape.

Rotate the mower blades out of the way of the chute.

Remove the locking wing nut from the carriage bolt on the mulch plug. Place the mulch plug into the discharge opening with the carriage bolt threads facing upward.

Fit the mulch plug onto the mower deck lip. Remove the tape from the metal deflector and discharge chute so that it falls into place.

Insert the carriage bolt into the mounting hole on the lower left side of the mower deck. Tighten the locking wing nut.

Attach the mulching blades. For the X300 models, place the mulching blade onto the stud with the arched side facing upward. Attach the beveled washer with the cupped side facing upward, followed by the nut. Tighten the nut to 50 pounds per foot, using a torque wrench. Repeat with the other blade. Alternatively, for the LT, GX and LX models, place the washer and beveled washer on the bolt with the cupped side facing upward. Ensure that the deflector cup is situated properly on the mower deck and attach the blade with the arched side facing upward. Tighten the bolt to 55 pounds per foot, using a torque wrench. Repeat with the other blade.
