This automotive "how-to" guide was specifically written to assist owners of the 6th generation (1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002 & 2003) GM Pontiac Grand Prix in replacing the coin battery inside the key fob remote control.

Owners of other General Motors brand vehicles from Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Saturn, Hummer, Oldsmobile and Pontiac with similar keyless entry remote controls may also find this guide to be useful.

After nearly 10 years of service, the key fob remote controls for my 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix are only able to open or lock the car doors from a foot or two away.

To open a GM key fob, you'll need either a flathead screwdriver or a thick coin such as a U.S. Quarter.

The original battery is a Panasonic CR2032 3V coin cell.

A replacement CR2032 can be purchased at any auto parts store, a pharmacy such as CVS or online at Amazon.

Once the halves of the key fob remote control are separated, you can gently pry out the Panasonic CR20323V watch battery with a small flathead screwdriver from the bottom half of the key fob.

Replace the old battery with a new one, being sure to place the "+" (top) side of the battery down.

Finish the job by lining up the two halves of the key fob and snap them together.

Then re-attach the key ring and test to see if the new battery vastly increases the distance at which you can lock or unlock the doors and pop open the trunk.

How to Replace a Battery in a GM Remote

General Motors (GM) keyless entry systems allow car owners to unlock the doors on their GM vehicles by pressing a button on a small key fob. The key fob is a transmitter that sends a signal to a receiver in the vehicle to unlock the doors. The transmitter is powered by a small battery inside the fob. With use over time, the battery eventually gets too low to transmit the signal thus the fob no longer works as intended. A small screwdriver is all that is needed to open the fob so that the battery can be replaced.

Step 1

Insert the tip of the screwdriver into the notch on the edge of the fob adjacent to the keyring hole.

Step 2

Turn the screwdriver inside the notch to gently pry apart the halves of the fob.

Step 3

Remove the battery gently. The battery holder is fragile and will not tolerate aggressive handling. Lift the edge of the battery, then slip it out of its holder.

Insert the new battery into the battery holder, then snap the fob case back together.

Tips

  • If there is no notch on your GM fob, insert the tip of the screwdriver into the seam between the front half of the fob case and the rear half of the case.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-tip screwdriver (small)
  • Battery

Warnings

  • If the battery holder breaks during removal of the old battery or insertion of the new battery, the fob is unrepairable and must be replaced.
