This video shows you how to change the oil and oil filter in your 2016 GMC Acadia. When you change your own oil, you know that you are putting quality oil in your Acadia and that the filter is being changed too. Most importantly, you get a chance to look around under your Acadia for potential trouble spots. This video shows you the location of your oil drain plug, oil filter, oil fill cap and dipstick in addition to the steps needed to change the oil and filter in your Acadia. For most GMCs, you can wrap an old belt around the oil filter and unscrew it by hand. If you can't do this, see our parts page to find a GMC Acadia oil filter wrench. If your Acadia is too low to the ground to access your drain plug and oil filter, be sure to use jack stands and safe jacking procedures before getting under your Acadia.

Most GMCs have the oil type printed on the oil cap - it will likely be 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30 or 10W-40. If it isn't printed on the oil cap, check your owners manual for the exact type before adding new oil. We recommend wearing safety glasses whenever you are working under your Acadia. You never know what could be dripping down from the engine, battery acid, engine coolant, brake fluid, etc. All of these fluids are extremely harmful to your eyes and skin so it is important to protect yourself.

This automotive maintenance tutorial was specifically written to assist owners of the first generation (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016) GMC Acadia equipped with the 3.6 liter LLT V6 engine in changing the motor oil and replacing the oil filter.

Owners of other General Motors vehicles such as the Buick Verano, Regal, LaCrosse, Cascada, Encore, Enclave, Envision, GMC Canyon, Sierra 1500, Terrain, Yukon, Denali, Savana, Spark, Sonic, Cruze, Malibu, Impala, Volt, Camaro, Corvette, SS, Trax, Equinox, Traverse, Tahoe, Suburban, Colorado, Silverado and Express may also find these DIY instructions to be helpful.

The items needed to complete this procedure include a floor jack, two jack stands (or automotive ramps), a 15mm socket with a 3/8" drive ratcheting wrench, a used oil catch container, an automotive funnel,  a new oil filter and 6 US quarts (5.7L) of new SAE 5W-30 oil.

A few compatible replacement oil filters with their part numbers are as follows: Mobil 1 M1-212, Royal Purple 20-500, Purolator L22500, K&N PS-2011, Hastings LF641, Motorcraft FL500S, ACDelco PF63E, Fram PH10575, Wix 57045, Pennzoil HPZ-173, Royal Purple 20-500, Champion COS10060, Bosch L3502 and Mann # ML 1049.

Insert the automotive funnel in to the oil filler hole and slowly pour in about 5 to 5 1/2 quarts of the engine's 6 quart total capacity for an oil change with filter replacement.

It is far better to have slightly less oil than necessary in an engine than to over fill it. Running an engine that has been over filled with oil may result in sluggish performance, damage to seals or gaskets and possible damage to other components.

Temporarily replace the oil filler cap by spinning it on in the clockwise direction. Push the oil dipstick down in to place.

Run the engine for a few minutes, turn it off, and allow it to rest for at least 5 to 10 minutes while the new oil flows down to the oil pan.

Pull out the yellow handled dipstick, wipe it clean, re-insert it and pull it out again to check the oil level.

If necessary, slowly add in more oil and re-check the dipstick until the level reaches at or near the top of the crosshatched area on the tip which indicates the "Full" or "Max" level.

You may not need to pour in the entire 6 quarts of new oil depending on how long you allowed the old oil to drain out.

You may not need to pour in the entire 6 quarts of new SAE 5W-30 oil depending on how long you allowed the old oil to drain out.

To reset the engine oil life system, follow these steps: turn the ignition to the On/Run position with the transmission in Park, press the trip odometer reset button until "oil life remaining" is on the display, then press and hold the reset button until "oil life remaining" changes to 100%. You'll hear three chimes and the "change engine oil soon" message will turn off.

For Acadia vehicles with the DIC (driver information center) repeat the steps above except by pressing the "vehicle information button" to select the "oil life remaining" screen and then hold the button to reset it to 100%.

Be sure to record the oil change in your SUV's service records.

It would be a good idea to check your driveway, garage or parking spot for fresh spots of oil over the new few days which may indicate an oil leak from the drain bolt or the new filter.
