Actually, there are far fewer newsstands in Manhattan, especially the freestanding ones on street corners, than there used to be -- lke even 10 or 15 years ago. There was a big process several years ago for replacing the old wooden ones, with high-tech modern ones, they selected a design, then the newspaper business tanked. Yes, there are still some, but they are more likely ones that also sell lottery tix (not to mention soft drinks and snacks), as that is where most of the money comes from now. Also, regarding convenience stores, don't be surprised if you run into one that carries only the tabloids
I have had the Times delivered for the past 8 or 9 years (in part because it was becoming tougher to find it on street), but I no longer get it Sundays, only Mon-Sat., as, in my opinion, the Sunday one had too litttle news and too many ad supplements -- plus the printed-in-advance Sunday sections, like arts, books, travel, magazine, etc., come wth my Saturday paper anyway. On the weekends what I really like is FT (Financial Times) Weekend, which has a terrific arts section and is slimmer than NYT, but which I have to pick up at a newsstand.(And by the way it is a real bargain at $3, snce it costs about twice that in Europe.) There are several newsstands in my neighborhood that carry it, but I have found it challenging a few times when outside my own neighborhood, and that has made me very aware of the decline of freestanding (and other) Manhattan newsstands over the past several years.
It wasn't that long ago that I can recall figuring out which newsstand got the Sunday Times first on Sat night and going out at that time to get it, sometimes just waiting for the truck to pull in if it hadn't yet arrived. Or going out with someone and the ritual of picking up the Times on the way home. Now I have no idea at what time it shows up Sat night or where. And decades ago, when there was a big story breaking, I can remember walks to newsstands that got the early edition on weekday nights.
The advantage of digital of course is that they can continuially update for breaking stories -- no longer just city, late, etc. editions. I was in Europe during storm Sandy and remember sitting with my laptop early one morning in Italy reading the Times as it continually updated - including live coverage of evacuations at NYU medical center and other hospitals on flooded FIrst Av.. It was a jaw dropping experience.Edited: 2 years ago

The New York Times announced yesterday that the suggested newsstand price for the Sunday paper in the New York metropolitan region would increase to $2.50, from $2, starting on April 2.
The weekly price for home delivery in the New York region, when provided directly by The Times, will also increase, to $6.70, from $6.10.
The higher prices reflect higher costs for producing The Times, particularly for paper, Times officials said.

THE SUNDAY TIMES IS RAISING ITS PRICE
The New York Times will increase the newsstand price of its Sunday editions from 60 cents to 75 cents effective with the issue of March 7. The price increase will apply within a 50‐mile radius of New York City, but will include all of Long Island.
The higher cost has been made necessary because of increased production costs.
Beyond the 50‐mile radius and except on Long Island, the newsstand price will remain at $1.
The cost of The Times to independent home delivery dealers will not increase. Although prices to wholesalers will increase and the prices charged by wholesalers to independent home delivery dealers will increase, The Times will grant promotional rebates to these independent home delivery dealers, thus insuring that their costs will not rise. This is being done because of the personal service rendered by the independent dealers.
The last time the price of the Sunday paper was increased in the city and suburban areas was Feb. 24, 1974, when the price rose from 50 cents to 60 cents.
