From clever manoeuvres and badassery to eccentric humor and chilling revelations, the intense yet humorous Korean drama Vincenzo is a fun mixture of unpredictable and wacky events that’s keeping viewers worldwide hooked. When we say our jaws dropped pretty much at least once every episode… we ain’t lyin’. Check out some of the most surprising moments so far below!

SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED TILL EP 10 YET!

1) What happened to Mr. Cho

Mr. Cho (Choi Young-jun) being forced to sign over Geumga Plaza to Babel Group wasn’t necessarily surprising. However, immediately getting hit by a truck of doom definitely was. Even more surprising was him actually surviving the collision! Despite the near death experience, Mr. Cho continues to help Vincenzo (Song Joong-ki) as they try to figure out a way to get the fortune of gold hidden below the building. However, there might be some trouble ahead with Vincenzo prioritising taking down Babel over getting the gold.

2) How far Choi Myung-hee went in order to gain the upper hand

It was obvious Choi Myung-hee (Kim Yeo-jin) was going to be on the bad guys’ side, but who knew she would be so vicious? The zumba lover ordering the hit on Hong Cha-young’s (Jeon Yeo-been) father revealed how far she’s willing to go. If she’s fine with being responsible for the death of one person, she probably doesn’t have any qualms about killing more people. She’s met a match in Vincenzo, but she’s eager to keep fighting. Given her antagonistic relationship with Hong Cha-young, you can expect even more dirty tricks up her sleeve.

3) Geumga Fam having hidden skills

In earlier episodes, we saw the people of Geumga Plaza shy away from gangsters and avoid confrontation. Lee Cheol-wook (Yang Kyung-won) talked big about his fighting skills, but never proved them until intruders entered Vincenzo’s home. It seems like the pawnshop couple are former athletes with Cheol-wook being versed in judo and his wife Jang Yeon-jin (Seo Ye-hwa) showing some weightlifting moves. It was even more surprising when we saw dry cleaner Tak Hong-sik (Choi Duk-moon) expertly pierce bad guys with his scissors. There’s definitely more to the people of Geumga Plaza than meets the eye.

4) Wasps in the courtroom

In order to postpone the case involving Babel Chemicals, Team Geumga went all out. Hong Cha-young pretending to faint and Mr. Cho causing the lights to go out were somewhat standard moves. However, releasing wasps to disturb the courtroom was definitely an original idea. Dousing the judge with honey water and getting him stung in the face was quite genius and oh so amusing!

5) Vincenzo outsmarting Babel and Wusang

With Wusang interfering with witnesses for the case against Babel Chemicals, Hong Cha-young and Vincenzo schemed their way into admitting the Italian lawyer as a surprise witness, and one who can’t be rejected at that. Another nice twist was the fact that their medical expert witness is the wife of the corrupt medical expert on Babel Group’s side. Vincenzo has outsmarted his enemies before, but this was surprising given how hopeless their situation had seemed.

6) Jang Joon-woo being the real head of Babel Group…

In the first few episodes, we only see the cute and bumbling side of Jang Joon-woo (Ok Taec-yeon). His feelings for Hong Cha-young and him riding around on an electric scooter were pretty endearing. The reveal of him being the intimidating head of Babel Group was shocking to say the least. He’s quite unhinged whenever things don’t go his way, and he’s a chilling character who even killed his own father.

7) … and the killing spree that left a trail of bodies in his wake

We know Jang Joon-woo is a force to be reckoned with but it was both surprising and chilling to see him whack a prosecutor to almost immediate death. It even shocked his brother and his lawyers. He also had Gil Jong-moon and the people protecting him killed. However, the worst part was when he had the families of the victims murdered and made it look like a suicide. Jang Joon-woo is having fun while hiding his identity and playing god.

The question is – who will he eliminate next?

We’re only halfway through the series, so there’s bound to be more shocking developments ahead. Don’t miss out on the fun and watch Vincenzo, only on Netflix!

Kim Yeo Jin On Breaking Stereotypes With Villain Role In “Vincenzo,” Teamwork With Co-Stars, And More

Ahead of the grand finale of tvN’s “Vincenzo,” Kim Yeo Jin took part in an interview to share her thoughts on her character, the ending, and more.

The tvN drama stars Song Joong Ki as Vincenzo Cassano, an Italian lawyer and Mafia consigliere who is of Korean descent, but was adopted by an Italian family at a young age. When he moves back to Korea due to a conflict within his organization, he winds up crossing paths with sharp-tongued lawyer Hong Cha Young (Jeon Yeo Bin). Together, they join forces in using villainous methods to take down villains who cannot be punished by the court of law.

Kim Yeo Jin plays Choi Myung Hee, the ambitious and ruthless lawyer of Woosang Law Firm.

Spoilers

Choi Myung Hee is a different kind of villain from the ones that often appear in Korean dramas. On playing the role, Kim Yeo Jin commented, “Of the characters I’ve played until now, this was the hardest one to approach. It was a villain I had never seen anywhere else. It’s hard to call her a villainess. She’s genderless. Not feminine nor masculine, like a middle-aged woman at times and like a middle-aged man at others. While acting, I focused on the fact that she has to be despicable. In many works, a villainess is sexy and captivating, or a certain incident or accident that causes her to carry out evil deeds is portrayed so that viewers can empathize with her. But for Choi Myung Hee, all of these were stripped away, and I had to show a balance between her mundanity and her evilness.”

Choi Myung Hee’s strong Gyeongsang dialect added character to the role. Because Kim Yeo Jin grew up in Masan, the dialect felt natural to her. She explained that she acted without the dialect when was speaking to Jang Jun Woo (2PM’s Taecyeon) and that she spoke with a stronger accent when she was addressing characters she looked down on or wanted to fight.

Another defining characteristic of Choi Myung Hee is her love for zumba dancing. Kim Yeo Jin revealed that although she had never learned zumba, she had learned to salsa. Analyzing her character, she shared, “It may be a stereotype to think, ‘Can someone who loves music and dance so much be a bad person?’ she is a new kind of character who meshes her daily life with her terrible crimes. That’s why she was a very interesting character who seems normal until she suddenly makes your skin crawl.”

The way that Choi Myung Hee brought death upon others while going about her ordinary life made her wickedness appear even more pronounced. When she ordered her subordinates to kill lawyer Hong Yoo Chan (Yoo Jae Myung), she was eating a mouthful of ssam (wrap) and gave the order nonchalantly like she was talking about the weather. Kim Yeo Jin agreed that this was a crucial scene, sharing, “Before this scene, many viewers were unsure whether she was a bad person or a good person, but this scene showed a twist. I was also shocked when I read the script. I think the way she was eating depicted her hunger and greed. I thought it was a symbolic scene that portrayed Choi Myung Hee’s world where the strong prey upon the weak.”

Asked to pick a favorite scene or line, Kim Yeo Jin said with a laugh, “Please watch the last episode.” She also said she liked the recent scene at the bar with Hong Cha Young (Jeon Yeo Bin) and that she wished they had more scenes together. She recounted, “At the time, I looked at Cha Young and thought ‘You and I are alike. In 20 years, you’ll become like me,’ and that made me laugh. I thought of myself as creepy for thinking that. It was a scene with depth that made me think a lot.”

Viewers may wonder what Choi Myung Hee’s ultimate goal is, but according to Kim Yeo Jin, she doesn’t have one. “It’s her way of living. All she has in her life is a desire to win and a desire to be acknowledged. She lived in a world where you live if you win and die if you lose, and that’s what she believes.”

Kim Yeo Jin shared that the actors had great teamwork, saying, “I’m comfortable with Jo Han Chul (playing Han Seung Hyuk), so we could freely talk about acting. Same goes for Taecyeon. With Song Joong Ki, we tried new things almost every scene.” The actress commented that she naturally laughs a lot and had trouble holding in her laughter and concentrating because of Jo Han Chul and Kwak Dong Yeon.

The actress said about Choi Myung Hee, “I think she will be a turning point in my acting career. My mindset has changed a lot while playing this role. I think ‘Vincenzo’ is a work that has never been seen before. Unimaginable things happen all the time, and there’s a very serious, cruel, and deep darkness to it, but it’s very funny. It has every genre in it. It’s confusing until the end, but that’s the charm of this drama. Isn’t that how our lives are?”

In response to a request to drop a spoiler about the ending, Kim Yeo Jin revealed, “Whatever you’re imagining, it’s probably going to be even greater that that. You should absolutely not miss it.”

Lastly, she shared a few words for the viewers of the drama. She expressed, “When I read the script, I was worried about how people would receive Choi Myung Hee. I wondered how people would take the way the cases are solved and the comical and fantasy-like stories, but my worries were baseless. The viewers enjoyed the novelty and unfamiliarity. It made me think that the level of our audience is the force that makes Korean dramas grow. Because you didn’t reject the novelty and quickly absorbed and became a fan of it, I think that Korean dramas will be able to portray new stories endlessly. I was impressed by the viewers. I also enjoyed ‘Vincenzo’ as a viewer, so I am sad [to see it end]. ‘Vincenzo’ and Choi Myung Hee will stay in my memory for a long time. I hope they are a drama and a character like that to the viewers as well.”

The final episode of “Vincenzo” airs on May 2 at 9 p.m. KST.

Synopsis[edit]

At the age of eight, Park Joo-hyung (Song Joong-ki) was adopted by an Italian family. He later joins the mafia and is adopted by Don Fabio, head of the Cassano Family. Renamed “Vincenzo Cassano” he becomes a lawyer, a consigliere for the mafia, and Don Fabio's right-hand man. After Fabio dies, Paolo, Fabio's biological son and the new leader of the Cassano Family attempts to kill Vincenzo.

He then flees to Seoul and sets out to recover 1.5 tons of gold that he helped a recently-dead Chinese tycoon secretly stash within the basement of Geumga Plaza. However, a real estate company, which is a subsidiary of Babel Group, has illegally taken ownership of the building, and Vincenzo must use his skills to reclaim the building and recover his fortunes.

Among the quirky tenants at Geumga Plaza is the Jipuragi Law Firm run by Hong Yoo-chan (Yoo Jae-myung) in which Vincenzo finds he has aligned interests. At first he comes into conflict with Hong Yoo-chan's daughter, Hong Cha-young (Jeon Yeo-been), an attorney for a rival firm, but after her father's death she takes over the practice and joins forces with Vincenzo and the other tenants to fight Babel Group.

Production[edit]

In May 2020, director Kim Hee-won and screenwriter Park Jae-bum teamed up for Vincenzo.[34] In July 2020, it was reported that Song Joong-ki and Jeon Yeo-been are considering the offer to star in the series;[35] while Ok Taec-yeon was confirmed for the cast.[36] Song and Jeon confirmed their appearance in the following month.[37]

The first script reading took place in January 5, 2021.[38]

The drama serves as a reunion project for Kwak Dong-yeon and Kim Yeo-jin who both starred in the 2018 drama My Strange Hero. This drama also reunites Ok Taec-yeon and Jeon Yeo-been who worked together in Save Me.

The series was planned to be partially shot in Italy but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, related scenes were augmented with CGI.[39]

Episodes 17 and 18 were delayed one week due to the production team wanting to "improve quality" of the episodes.[40]

The series was previously heavily criticized for showing bibimbap from a Chinese brand in one of the episodes, as part of a product placement deal with a Chinese company.[41]
