Plus, what she has learned from working with Kurt Sutter.

From co-creators Kurt Sutter and Elgin James, the FX series Mayans M.C. is the next chapter in the Sons of Anarchy saga, now set in a post-Jax Teller world. Fresh out of prison and trying to carve out a new identity in a town where he was once the golden boy with big dreams, Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes (JD Pardo) is trying to navigate what it means to be a prospect in the Mayans M.C. charter on the California/Mexico border. While figuring out what the next step in his life can be, EZ is torn between his struggling but lawful father (Edward James Olmos), his brother Angel (Clayton Cardenas), who is a full patch member of the M.C., and his childhood sweetheart Emily (Sarah Bolger), who seems to have moved on without him.

While at the FX portion of the Television Critics Association Press Tour, Collider got the opportunity to sit down and chat 1-on-1 with Irish actress Sarah Bolger about bringing a strong female energy to this M.C. world, how exciting it is to get to play a woman who is a power player herself, how she most connects to her character, what it’s like for Emily to have EZ back in her life now, working with JD Pardo to develop the history between their characters, and having to both get the American accent down and learn Spanish. She also talked about the wide variety of characters she’s been lucky enough to play, as well as what she remembers of her experience making the never-aired Fox pilot for Locke & Key (which is now going to series at Netflix), back in 2011.

Collider:  I’ve seen the first two episodes of this, and I was very happy to see some bad-ass female energy on this show.

SARAH BOLGER:  I know! Isn’t it great?! And it’s a strong female energy. In terms of ratio, we are outnumbered by men, but in terms of story, it’s an equal playing field. Kurt Sutter writes phenomenal female characters, and Elgin James and Kurt, as a duo, have just written the most dynamic, intriguing, intense characters that I could ever imagine being able to play.

On a show like this, you can't just be the girlfriend or the wife and actually survive. You have to be more than that.

BOLGER:  Absolutely! And we're not. One of the wonderful things, even from the audition, is that these characters were not written as, “Emily Thomas, girlfriend of,” “Emily Thomas, wife of,” or “Emily Thomas, love interest.” It was, “Emily Thomas, power player.” These are women who are not necessarily attached to anyone. Their story points are their own, and that is incredible. That makes me so proud to be a part of this piece.

Why do you think it’s taken her this long to start to ask questions about what’s going on, in her own life? Why does she want more control of her situation now?

BOLGER:  Eight years ago, the love of her life, the person who she thought was going to be the man she would end up with, went to jail. He ruined everything, in her eyes. He messed up everything they had planned. So, when you meet her eight years later, she has to command her own life. The choices she’s now making define her, but define a woman she never thought she’d be. She ends up surrounding herself with people who probably are nothing like the relationship she had before, and who are polar opposite, in terms of demeanor, in terms of power, in terms of financial, and in terms of future. I think she has to erase the past. She has to make choices to secure a future for herself, even though it’s not the woman she ever thought she’d be. I think Emily is creating her new self, as we meet her, and she's figuring that out, like we all are. It’s going to be a really rocky, beautiful journey.

She also seems like she’s wanted to live in the dark a little bit.

BOLGER:  Absolutely! I think we all do that.

But then, you also can’t un-know what you’re made aware of.

BOLGER:  I think ignorance is bliss, in a lot of unique scenarios, and Emily’s scenario is unique enough that she’s been told it’s safer to be in the dark. But the thing about Emily is that she’s too bright. She needs information. She craves it. What was maybe romantic or sexy about not knowing the ins and outs is now so much a part of her world. Her world has crashed apart and she needs to know everything. She can no longer be in the dark, she can no longer be naïve, she’s no longer an ingenue. She’s like, “Give me the information and let me deal with that.” That’s the woman she is, innately.

It seems like this world and this character would feel very foreign to you. Especially early on, what did you find yourself connecting with?

BOLGER:  I started acting when I was really young. I came to the States and didn't know anyone, and I spoke with a weird Irish accent. And Emily moved to this Southern California Mexican border town, where she doesn't speak Spanish, she doesn't know anyone, she's super pale, and she doesn't fit in. You have to change yourself and be a little bit of a chameleon. She learned Spanish. I learned to speak with an American accent. You decide to change yourself so that you can blend in, feel local, and feel a part of something. I, Sarah Bolger, have been a constant nomad, my entire life. I think Emily moved around a lot, and when she settled, it was important to her to feel involved. She was so connected to EZ because of his familial bonds. She probably came from something a little bit more cold and distant.

Emily also feels like she could be an only child.

BOLGER:  Exactly! Not that that has been decided on, but I do believe that's true.

What’s it like to work with a veteran like Edward James Olmos?

BOLGER:  He’s incredible. He’s the father Emily never had. He’s such a warm actor. He has this deep baritone to his voice that’s really quite lovely. It’s amazing that she still has this relationship with her ex’s family. She probably feels more connected to his family than anyone.

It wasn’t his father’s fault that all of this happened.

BOLGER:  It’s no one’s fault. That’s the thing. Those things are never really anyone’s fault. You get thrown into the wrong situation, and it’s a plethora of things.

You also got to read with JD Pardo, pretty early on in this process. What was it like to get to start building that dynamic, from the very beginning?

BOLGER:  We also did the pilot a long time ago. We did the pilot about a year ago, maybe longer, so we’ve been building that relationship. We went out a bunch of times, and grabbed coffee or a drink, because for the most part, the show is set in present day. There’s only a few of those flashbacks. So, for those present-day moments, we have this huge history. We have thousands of moments that we’ve built together. In the pilot, there’s a huge moment where her life changes, in one of the flashbacks, so we had to hang out a lot and set the groundwork. We’re getting there, slowly but surely.

How much about were you informed of? Did you have any of that information going into this, or did you have to just keep adapting, as you learned what was really going on?

BOLGER:  We really have only gotten [information] from episode to episode. We don’t get to know too far in the future. What the showrunners have allowed us to do is really build the characters we want, and then they see things in us, that we're bringing to each episode, and they go, “Oh, I like that. Let’s develop that.” They give us the opportunity to be able to develop the moments and relationships that they see sprinkled throughout. It’s wild because we never know what’s going to happen, with each episode.

Emily is stuck in this secret world that she can't tell anyone about. As a character, does she have anybody that she can have girl time with?

BOLGER:  No, I don’t believe so.

Does she have anybody that she can confide in?

BOLGER:  No. I think she probably did grow up as an only child and she is more secure with the idea of working things out herself than depending on other people. I think her history has told her that everyone she's depended on has gone away.

Do you think that she’s happy with the life she has now, or do you think she idealizes the life she could have had?

BOLGER:  I think she likes the life she has now. I think she looks at her life with no regrets. That’s who she is. That’s built into her DNA. She’s all in, all the time. And I’m never saying that there’s not a moment that she doesn’t doubt or question or dream of what could have been, but I think that’s wasted time. Emily has such a pragmatic approach to things. She went to law school and got some sort of law degree before the show began, so there are elements of her that have a very logical, strategic mind. But she’s in it now, and she has to be in it. That’s part of her everyday now, for better or for worse. But I do think she loves whom she’s with.

Have you found it harder to do the accent or to learn Spanish?

BOLGER:  Neither are hard on their own. When I have to switch back and forth, it’s not hard to go from the American accent to speaking Spanish, but then speaking Spanish and going back into the American accent is hard. I practice it so much. I talk to myself in the mirror, all the time. It’s like speaking multiple languages. I’m taking Spanish lessons now, but for the most part, I don’t speak Spanish. I only know the basics of Spanish now. It’s hard, and I want to get the right accent. It’s so romantic and beautiful.

Has being a part of this show, playing this character in this world, changed you as an actress?

BOLGER:  Kurt and Elgin have made me look at choices I’ve made and make bold choices that are more daring. I try to bring all of the realism that I can into these scenarios that are so crazy and outlandish, but this shit happens to people. It’s a roller coaster and it’s hard work, but every day has been a joy.

The characters you’ve been playing for a while are so different. Is that something that you had to work really hard to find, or do you just feel really lucky that those roles have come your way?

BOLGER:  I think a handful of the roles that I’ve gotten to play are characters whom I’ve lived, that are like younger versions of me, but who are maybe more naïve and a little bit wilder than when I was. And I’ve gotten to play 16 and 17 when I was a little bit older, so I got to pull from experience. I played a doctor on Counterpart, so that was about studying and watching documentaries, and reading, and trying to learn. But this woman is like no one I really know, so I’m pulling from not only the writing, which is spectacular, but the woman I dream to be like. It’s a weird mix. There are movies I watch, or some actor I have in my head who embodies that, but this girl is the better version of me. I almost live vicariously through acting Emily. She cries and she feels stuff, but she’s not afraid of that.

I have to admit that, years ago, I saw the Fox pilot that you did for Locke and Key, and it’s one of my favorite pilots that I’ve ever seen for a TV show.

BOLGER:  They’re making that now at Netflix. I loved that pilot, too. Mark Romanek is an amazing director. He’s the most visual.

What do you remember about that experience?

BOLGER:  I remember it being the most high-powered set that I’d ever been on. The writers wrote Transformers, and Josh Friedman, Mark Romanek and Steven Spielberg produced it. It just felt so massive. I felt so lucky. It was big and expensive, and there was lots of CGI. I’m really proud to remain in the FOX family.

It’s so funny to see it go from that pilot to then maybe a movie to then maybe a TV series at Hulu, and now going to Netflix.

BOLGER:  I know! Isn’t that crazy? It’s destined to be made, it’s so good. I’m still in touch with Joe Hill, all the time. He’s incredible.

Born Howard Irvine Coones but known to all as ‘Rusty’, this HAMC member stands 6 foot 5 inches tall and is as imposing in real life as he looks on screen. His real-life story is a little more colorful than his reel-life character, but more on that later.

Coones became involved with the show when Charlie Hunnam, the star of SoA visited his motorcycle shop, Illusion, to buy a few extra motorcycles for the show, which were later auctioned off for charity. However, there are rumors circulating that Coones had previously met the show's creator, Kurt Sutter, during a Hells Angels MC toy run in the San Fernando Valley.

Later, Sutter got in touch with Coones, not only having Coones customize a motorcycle for him, but he also brought him on the show as a cast member and technical advisor.

In SAMCRO, He’s Rane Quinn

In Sons of Anarchy, Rane Quinn is the President of the Nomads chapter, and he is the guy who brings “Happy Lowman” aka David Labrava to the Sons of Anarchy MC. In season 3, Happy would leave the Nomads chapter in order to join SAMCRO as their enforcer.

In season 5, the Nomads chapter disbands and Quinn goes on to join the Sons of Anarchy Indian Hills Chapter, only to leave that and join SAMCRO in season 6.

On the show, Quinn is a violent man, committing a total of three murders, all enemies of SAMCRO: killing a member of the True IRA, an East Dub member as well as a member of the Lin Triad.

The Real-Life Story Of Rusty Coones

Rusty Coones is more than just a member of the Hells Angels Motorcycle Club, he was the President of two HAMC chapters. First San Fernando Valley and then the Orange County chapter, a chapter he founded. So we could almost say he's HAMC royalty.

His real-life story comes with lots of drama and tragedy as well. In the 1980s, his heroin-addicted brother OD'ed, and in response, he opened a rehabilitation center in California. He would close it down in 1995 due to a change in government subsidies that made it impossible to run it and turn a profit. In the late '80s, he also met his wife, Katherine Coones, and went on to have a son and daughter with her. This petite blond has stuck with Rusty Coones through thick and thin.

In the true spirit of being an outlaw biker, Coones himself has been to prison twice. The first time he went down for drugs. In 1999, he bought Illusion Motorsports and was trying to make something out of it by customizing motorcycles, only to go back to prison on drug conspiracy charges, distributing a chemical used to make crystal meth.

This time, he stayed behind bars for six years, and his wife Katherine, kept Illusion Motorsports running for Rusty to have something to do when he got back. When he finally did get back, the economy was failing and Illusion wasn’t doing all that well.

It was at this point Coones met Charlie Hunnam and Kurt Sutter, and the rest is, as they say, history.

Coones Feels SOA Was A Godsend

Rusty Coones has been a HAMC member and been to prison twice on some serious charges, that's not the kind of stuff that would endear this bear of a man to anyone.

However, after his role on Sons of Anarchy, a show with some 5 million viewers, Coones has become something of a celebrity of sorts in his town. His exposure on the show was enough to give his business a breath of fresh air. Sutter was so impressed with him that he even featured three songs from Coones’ rock-metal band Attika 7 in the show. Being a TV MC member has done Coones a lot of good.

Happy Lowman is a fictional character on the FX television series Sons of Anarchy. His ironic name is based on that of Happy Loman from Arthur Miller's play Death of a Salesman. Biography[edit]

Happy, or "Hap" as called by SOA members is an enforcer for the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, and, along with Tig Trager, is commonly used to carry out the club's murders. He is from Tacoma, Washington but frequently visits the club's charter in Charming, California where he has a good relationship with the President, Clay Morrow. Hap mentions that his mother is from Bakersfield. A heartless assassin, he has been shown to enjoy acts of violence that even other members of the club are disturbed by. Despite the toughness he regularly displays, he is depicted in the show at times as being emotional and not just when a club member dies. He has a Smiley (happy face) tattooed on him every time he kills someone.

Happy first appears in the pilot episode at a club meeting. The Mayans, a rival motorcycle gang, had stolen the club's guns and burned down their weapons storage warehouse. However, Juice Ortiz, the club's intelligence officer, had located the guns in San Leandro, and the following night, Jax Teller, Tig Trager, Chibs Telford, and Clay Morrow stole the guns back from an industrial storage warehouse. They also destroyed the warehouse and a heroin factory.^[4] Happy kills Esai Álvarez, the son of the Mayans President Marcus Álvarez, as payback for the Mayans' attempted hits on Clay and Ernest Darby. Esai's father sanctioned the hit in a jail-house deal with Clay in exchange for SAMCRO's selling guns to the Mayans. Happy pretended to be a churro vendor, and when Esai approached his stall, Happy stabbed him in the back of the neck with a knife. Happy is also seen in the closing moments of the episode, getting his 11th Smiley tattoo, documenting Esai's murder.^[5] Happy states in the episode "Better Half" that his sick mother lives in Bakersfield, and that he is thinking of "going nomad" for a while to take care of her. Clay's response to that statement is, "There's always a seat at that table for you." Happy drove Cherry and Cameron Hayes to Canada in one of Chief Unser's trucks at the end of this episode.^[6] In the final episode of the season, "The Revelator", Happy goes with Chibs and Tig to San Joaquin to kill the witness who identified Bobby Munson and Opie after the murder of Brenan Hefner. The safe house was being guarded by two sheriffs and a female ATF agent, but the trio managed to knock all three unconscious and gain entry to the house. When Tig saw that the witness was a teenage girl, he had initial doubts about killing her, and Happy showed his cold-bloodedness by offering to kill her instead. However, Tig stepped up, but just before he shot her, Jax came in and stopped him doing so at gunpoint. Jax then told Chibs and Happy to leave, and beat Tig up for killing Donna. Later in the episode, Happy, as well as Sons of Anarchy members from across the country, attended the funeral of Opie Winston's wife Donna, whom Tig had mistakenly killed.^[7]

At the beginning of the season, Happy has gone nomad but often returns to Charming to help the club. Since Chibs' near-fatal injury, Happy has been present at all of SAMCRO's dealings, possibly filling in until Chibs is well again. Happy was arrested, along with most members of SAMCRO, when they accidentally raid a Christian retreat and fall into a trap set by a White supremacy group. He served time in prison with fellow members Clay, Tig, Juice, Bobby, and Jax. At the end of the episode, he and the others are released.

Season 3[edit]

At the beginning of season 3, Happy is very involved with SAMCRO affairs, still providing muscle while SAMCRO tackles the aftermath of Abel (Jax's son)'s kidnapping. During Half-Sack's funeral, Chibs mentions that Happy will be transferring to SAMCRO. Happy goes with Piney and Bobby to get medicine for his sick mother, but is cornered by hillbillies who are trying to steal the illegal meds from Piney's friend. When the hillbillies try to make a deal with them the SOA fires at them, because they realize she supplies clinics. With help from SAMCRO Happy, Piney, and Bobby are all safe.

In the episode "The Push", Happy is patched in as (becomes) an official SAMCRO member. In the next episode Happy accompanied SAMCRO to Belfast. When SAMCRO is arrested by officers and almost deported, the kidnappers interrogate them about who hired them. Jax tells Happy to kill one of the men, and Happy replies "Oh yes I will", but is stopped. A look into his dark mind is displayed when Liam O'Neill is being brutally tortured; Happy looks on in sheer delight while everyone else is visibly shaken. Happy is arrested with Jax, Clay, Tig, Bobby, and Juice in the season finale, and like the others, upon learning Jax ratted, has a look of hate on his face. When it is revealed SOA knew, and it was a Club plan, Hap laughs with the others.

Season 4[edit]

In the premiere, Happy and the other members are released. Happy and Tig love the "Jellybean", a strip club not known for the best or most hygienic dancers, where the Russians like to do business. Juice replies, "the freak circle is complete." Later in the premiere while being followed by two officers, Happy serves as a distraction by kicking the side of the patrol car, which is what had gets them in custody later.

In "Custody", on the side of the road, it's revealed Happy reuses condoms. He defends himself saying he's not cheap, just "mindful of excessive spending", which comes ip again in season 3, when he tells Clay his mother's medication is very costly and giving him money troubles, another reason he's willing to do runs and hits. Later in the same episode, Happy Juice, Bobby, and Chibs leave Opie and Lyla's wedding early to get their guns from the Russians and kill them. This is Juice's first kill for the club (that is mentioned or see on screen). Happy and Kozik are only mentioned in the next episode. In season 4 episode 3, Happy votes against becoming involved with the cartel, saying, "I'm sorry, but I'm a No."

In episode 3, it is revealed that he is a neat freak. In "With An X", when one of the bricks of the cartel's cocaine is stolen, Happy helps interrogate the prospects, pretending to bash Miles' hands with a hammer and locking them in a room with a loaded gun. When the thief is seemingly revealed to be Miles (actually Juice whom Miles caught, killed and planted the brick on), Happy shoots his body, calling him, "a lying bitch", and confirms to Clay that "he was VERY dead." When Clay is shot, supposedly by the Niners (actually Opie, vengeful over Clay's murder of Piney) Happy agrees with Tig's attempted murder of Laroy (although Tig accidentally killed Laroy's girlfriend Veronica Pope), stating, "he's gotta to die, like A LOT."

In the finale, Happy is seen at a SAMCO meeting, taking Opie's old seat at the clubhouse table.

Season 5[edit]

Happy is seen with the rest of the club in the season premiere when their shipment of cocaine is attacked by Niners, in revenge for Tig's murder of Laroy's girlfriend Veronica Pope. Happy is unintimidated by Roosevelt's threats to control their problems, to prevent them from hurting Charming, or he will call in Gang Task Force. When Opie is killed by black prisoners while inside, on orders of Veronica's father Damon Pope, Happy is present at his wake. Happy is later seen again in "Andare Pescare" helping Jax, Tig, Chibs, and Bobby track the man who beat Opie to death, who's revealed to be the cousin of the Grim Bastards MC President T.O. Cross. When Tig suggests tracking down the man themselves and bashing his head in, Happy states "Second that". In "To Thine Own Self" Happy is present during the dispute with Nero's old gang and accompanies Jax, Chibs, and Tig to meet with them. When they get into a high-speed chase/shootout, Happy's head is grazed by a bullet; he is shown to not be seriously injured and gets a thrill out of getting shot.

Happy has become the new sergeant-at-arms after Bobby's resignation as Vice President and Chibs' promotion. Happy is taken by the Chinese, to be held captive until they receive the second-in-command for the IRA. He later kills the Chinese and receives another smiley tattoo for killing a rat for Caccuza.

Happy makes his debut in the season finale: "Cuervo/Tz'ikb'uul", wherein it is revealed Happy killed Marisol Reyes, the mother of the series protagonist Ezekiel "EZ" Reyes and his brother Angel Reyes.

Season 2[edit]

EZ comes closer to cracking into Happy Lowman's involvement with killing operations for SAMCRO, including the murder of his own mother. In the second episode, EZ reveals the truth to his brother Angel about their mother's death and that he got information on the side about her killer; Happy Lowman, and his history with SAMCRO. Angel and EZ travel to Charming and break into Happy's house, holding him at gunpoint. The Reyes brothers try to get answers from a tied up Happy, but he refuses to speak until they threaten his dog, Opie. He explains the hit was for both their parents and that the order came from Mexico. He promises to get more information from his contact and that they will be even.
