If you cannot hear any sound from the speakers built into your VIZIO TV, check the following:
The volume level is set above zero.
The TV is not muted.
Under Audio or Audio Settings on the on-screen menu, TV Speakers is set to On.
All of the cables physically connected to the TV and the input devices are secure.
Switch to a different input device and verify there is sound from the TV speakers (for example, a DVD player or a gaming console). Turn the other device on and then use the INPUT button on the remote to switch to that device. Then attempt to play a DVD or game to determine if the TV speakers produce sound. If you do not have another device, and your TV is a VIA Smart TV you can test with any video application.
If you have a Cable or Satellite box, confirm that the audio is turned up and not muted within that box.
External Speakers, Sound Bar, Surround Sound System, or Other External Audio System
If you have an external audio system connected to your VIZIO TV and you do not hear any sound, check the following:
The volume control of the external audio system is set above zero.
The external audio system is not muted.
All of the cables physically connected to the TV and the audio device are secure.
Switch to a different input device and see if there is sound (for example, a DVD player or a gaming console). Turn on the other device and then use the INPUT button on the remote to change to that device. (Cable, Cable Box, DVD player, etc). Then attempt to play a DVD or game to determine if the speakers produce sound. If you do not have another device, and your TV is a VIA Smart TV you can test with any video application.
Disconnect the external audio device from TV and listen for audio from the TV’s built-in speakers. Under Audio or Audio Settings on the on-screen menu, set TV Speakers to On.
Since that does not change anything, follow that attached flow sheet. I've found that the audio IC in most TV is of inferior quality and has a tendency to fail.
It is possible that due to a failed IR board your Television just does not receive signal for the volume up.

You may have been watching your Vizio TV and noticed that the volume has a mind of its own. Many Vizio users have reported that the volume can randomly fluctuate, cut in and out or not respond. If you are finding your TV is doing the same, this article will provide a number of solutions you can try to fix it.
A Vizio TV’s volume will fluctuate if audio settings, such as ‘TruVolume’, conflict with your device. It may also be a firmware bug, a failing volume button, a faulty cable or the TV’s output settings. The volume may not respond at all if there is debris under the buttons or a remote is not paired.

Vizio TV Sound Keeps Going In and Out/Keeps Changing
Fluctuating volume or volume that cuts in and out is usually due to one of your devices conflicting with the settings on your TV. You can check this by unplugging all external devices and checking the volume in just your Vizio TV’s apps. The main issue is the ‘SRS TruVolume’ function.
Disable SRS TruVolume Function
The SRS TruVolume is a function that automatically adjusts the volume for a better audio experience. Unfortunately, this often conflicts with the settings on an external device.
For this reason, disabling this feature could fix your issues. You can do this by following the steps below.
Step 1: Press the ‘Menu’ button on the remote.
Step 2: Navigate to Audio Settings > Advanced Audio
Step 3: Change ‘RSS TruVolume’ to ‘Off’.
Any other settings that are automatically adjusting your audio can play a part in causing abnormal volume fluctuations. Some of these settings include ‘TruSurround’, ‘Surround Sound’ and ‘Volume Levelling’.
Even settings such as ‘Analog Output’ that are set to ‘Variable’ can affect this. Try changing anything that is ‘auto’ or ‘variable’ to ‘fixed’ instead.
You should also check the audio settings in your device, such as a set-top box or gaming console. You will need to disable any settings that allow the device to automatically adjust your volume. If this does not solve your issue, below are some general troubleshooting techniques you can try.
Performing a Hard Reset
A hard reset will allow you TV to unload any unnecessary data that might be affecting its performance. This will not delete any of your downloaded data or preferences, so it safe to perform whenever you are having issues.
Step 1: Turn of your TV and all connected devices.
Step 2: Unplug the TV from the wall power.
Step 3: Press and hold the ‘Power’ button on the TV for 30 seconds.
Step 4: Wait another 10 minutes with the TV unplugged.
Step 5: Plug the TV back in and turn it on.
Performing a Factory Reset
A factory reset is a very effective method of fixing unknown issues with your Vizio TV. This will restore the TV’s original settings, including the original firmware.
However, this reset will delete all of your saved preferences and downloaded content, so only do this if you are sure there is no other way. If you do want to reset your TV to factory settings, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Press the ‘Menu’ button on the remote.
Step 2: Navigate to Settings > Reset & Admin.
Step 3: Select ‘Reset TV to Factory Defaults’.
Step 4: Enter your TVs passcode or the default code ‘0000’.
Step 5: Select ‘Reset’ to conform the factory reset.
Step 6: Wait until the TV has fully restarted before you begin the set-up process.
Note that if this is a bug in the latest firmware, you might not want to update the TV until you know there is a new update available.
Update the TV’s Firmware
Another possibility is that you are operating firmware that has a fault or bug in it. When Vizio become aware of common bugs in the firmware, they will fix it and release a new update.
Normally your TV will automatically download and install this update. If you suspect that you are still running old firmware, you can manually update your Vizio TV using the steps below.
Step 1: Press the ‘Menu’ button on your remote.
Step 2: Navigate to Settings > Check for Updates
Step 3: If an update is available, confirm that you want to install it.
Check your Cables
If your sound is cutting in and out, you may have a faulty or loose cable. This can be any cable, such as a HDMI or coaxial cable. First, make sure you unplug and re-insert the cables; pushing them in as far as they can go.
If this doesn’t solve the issue, you can either try your cable in a different TV or try a new cable in your TV to determine if it is faulty. You should also make sure your cable is compatible with the audio/visual signal that is being delivered to your TV.
Vizio TV Volume Won’t Turn Up/Down
If your Vizio TV volume does not work, make sure that it is not the remote or TV buttons that are failing. If you are using a remote, you can try replacing the batteries first. However, if the batteries are dying, none of the buttons should work.
If it is exclusively the remote volume buttons, you may have debris stuck under the pads, or the remote might need to be reset. You can do this using the following steps.
Step 1: Remove the batteries from the remote.
Step 2: Press every button on the remote at least once. This will discharge any remnant power from the remote to complete the reset.
Step 3: Press both volume buttons several times to dislodge any debris beneath the pad.
Step 4: Re-insert the batteries and try the volume buttons again.
Alternatively, you may be using a remote other than the Vizio remote, such as your Xfinity remote. These remotes need to be paired to the TV in order to work. You can see how to pair the remote in your remote’s operating manual.
If it is the volume buttons on the back of the TV that are not working (below the power button), you can try pressing them multiple times to dislodge any debris. You can also perform a hard reset of the TV, which is detailed above.
However, it may not be the volume buttons that are causing the trouble. Check that the TV is unmuted and that the volume of any external speakers has been increased to maximum.
Vizio TV No Sound
As a general rule, there are 3 things to check if your Vizio TV sound is not working. First, check if your volume is not muted or set to zero. Second, make sure your TV is not set to use external speaker/headphones that is turned off. Third, make sure your TV speakers are set to “On” position.
If your Vizio TV volume is muted or set to zero, this should be a straight forward fix by unmuting and/or increasing your volume gradually.
If your Vizio TV is set to use external speaker/headphones that is turned off or turned down very low. You could either turn on/up the external speaker volume or set your TV to not use external speaker/headphones to test out your TV’s internal speakers.
If both of the above suggestions didn’t help. Make sure your TV speakers are turned on. You can do this by using your remote to go to the Audio Settings of your Vizio TV then turn on the TV Speakers setting.
If all fails and your Vizio TV still has no sound, try to power cycle your Vizio TV by unplugging the power cord of your TV from the wall power outlet. Hold down the power button on the TV for about 5 seconds. Then plug the TV back in to the power outlet and power on the TV.
Vizio TV Volume Low
It may seem simple, but if you are struggling to hear your TV’s audio, make sure the TV speakers or external speaker is turned on. To turn on your TV’s internal speakers, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Press the ‘Menu’ button on your remote.
Step 2: Navigate to Audio Settings > TV Speakers > On.
If you are using an external speaker, make sure the cables are connected properly and that the TV audio settings are optimum for external audio. If you navigate to the same Audio Settings as above, you can change the settings outlined below.
Step 1: Set ‘TV Speakers’ to ‘Off’.
Step 2: Set ‘Digital Audio Out’ to ‘Bitstream’.
Step 3: Set ‘Analog Audio Out’ to ‘Fixed’.
Step4: Set ‘Volume Levelling’ to ‘Off’.
Step 5: If you are using surround sound, set ‘Surround Sound’ to ‘On’.
It may also be the ‘TruVolume’ feature causing your audio to seem softer than usual. If this is the case, you can find how to disable this feature above.
You should also check the volume settings on your device, such as your cable TV box or gaming console. You may have the option to increase the volume from the internal settings.
Vizio TV Sound Keeps Going Down
You volume may keep going down due to the ‘TruVolume’ setting, or other volume features, which you can find at the beginning of this article.
It may also be that the ‘volume down’ button, either on your remote or on the back of your TV, is pressed down and stuck. In this case, you will need to perform a remote reset, or unstick the button, detailed above.
Another reason for this may be an old Vizio remote in your home. As these remotes have similar programming, they can interfere with the signals, issuing commands to your TV without you realising it.
You can check this by blocking the infrared receiver on the TV and seeing if the issue stops. If it does, your next problem will be trying to find the remote, or even another device, that is interfering with your TV.

Vizio TV Not Showing Volume
If your volume display is not showing, but you know you are adjusting the volume, this is a simple fix. Some people prefer to turn it off because it takes up substantial space on the screen when it is used. However, you can simply follow the steps below to display this feature.
Step 1: Press ‘Menu’ on the remote.
Step 2: Navigate to Settings > Audio > Volume Control Display
Step 3: Make sure this setting is set to ‘On’.

Vizio produce both TVs and Soundbars so that they can work together. However, sometimes you can still run into issues connecting the two devices or getting them to work properly. If this is the case for you, this article contains a number of things you can try to get your TV and Soundbar set up and working.
The Vizio Soundbar and TV will not work together if the cable is in the wrong port in either device. The recommended port is HDMI 1 (ARC) on the TV and HDMI OUT (ARC) on the Soundbar. You may also need to enable the ‘CEC’ and ‘ARC’ features, unplug other devices and change the Audio Output settings.
You can find out more about these settings and solutions below. I have also included a simplified ‘how to’ guide to make sure you have set up your Vizio TV and Soundbar correctly.
Vizio TV Not Working With Soundbar
Below are general troubleshooting tips for the Soundbar, including a hard reset, firmware update and factory reset. These will generally solve most issues. However, you can also find problem-specific solutions further down.
If you’re unsure if the problem lies with the Vizio TV or with the Soundbar, you can try performing a hard reset on both. The process is the same for both the TV and Soundbar. This type of reset will clear the device of any recent errors that have occurred, but will not erase any of your settings.
Step 1: Turn off the TV or Soundbar.
Step 2: Unplug the TV or Soundbar from and other devices so that it is not connected to anything.
Step 3: Unplug the TV or Soundbar from the power source.
Step 4: Hold the power button on the TV or Soundbar for 30 seconds.
Step 5: Wait another 10 minutes before plugging the TV or Soundbar back into the power outlet.
Step 6: Reconnect the TV or Soundbar to other devices and turn it back on.
Updating the Soundbar
You should make sure both the Vizio TV and the Soundbar are running the latest firmware. You can update the Soundbar using the SmartCast app or manually with a computer.
Running the latest firmware will ensure you are downloading all available fixes for previous firmware bugs. The Soundbar will indicate which firmware version it is running when you hold the ‘Volume Up’ and ‘Volume Down’ buttons at the same time.
To update via the SmartCast app, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Open the Vizio SmartCast app on your mobile.
Step 2: Navigate to Settings > System > Check for Updates.
Step 3: Select ‘Yes’ to confirm any available updates.
Step 4: Wait for the Soundbar to turn off and reconnect to the SmartCast app.
To update the Soundbar via a computer, follow the steps below instead.
Step 1: Go to the Vizio Support website.
Step2: Enter your Soundbar model number, for example ‘Vizio SB36512-F6’. Follow that string of text with ‘Firmware Update’
Step 3: Select the pertinent article with your model number and information about ‘Firmware Information’.
Step 4: Locate inside the article a link to download the latest firmware.
Step 5: Select ‘Instructions for Updating Using a Thumb Drive’.
Step 6: Select ‘Click Here To Download the Most Current Firmware Version’. Take note of where the .zip file saves on your computer.
Step 7: Extract the .zip file directly onto a USB. The USB should have at least 2GB in space and should not have any other files on it.
Step 8: Turn on your Soundbar and make sure it is set to an input that has no audio signal.
Step 9: Insert the USB into the back of the Soundbar and wait up to 15 minutes for the installation to complete.
Step 10: Wait for the lights to stop flashing and for the Soundbar to turn back on before you remove the USB.
A factory reset will erase all your settings from the Soundbar, returning it to its original condition.
Step 1: Press and hold the ‘Input’ button and the ‘Bluetooth’ button.
Step 2: Continue holding these two buttons for six seconds or until the Soundbar restarts.
If the Soundbar has not restarted after 10 seconds, try holding the ‘Input’ button with either the ‘Volume Down’ or ‘Volume Up’ button instead. These variations will differ depending on your Soundbar model.
Vizio TV Not Recognizing/Connecting to Soundbar
If your Vizio TV is not recognizing or connecting to your Soundbar, it may be due to interference from other devices. Try unplugging all other devices from the TV. Other devices using CEC seem to cause the most trouble.
Once you have unplugged all devices, try the Soundbar again. If it is working, you can plug your devices back in one at a time to see which device is causing the issue.
If it is still not working, you should also check the cables. The HDMI cable needs to be plugged into the HDMI-ARC port in both the TV and Soundbar. These ports are labelled as such,
You should then check if the cable was loose or is faulty. You can test this by plugging the cable into a different device or plugging a new cable into the Soundbar.
Finally, if CEC is disabled, you may have difficulty working your Soundbar. You can find how to enable this feature below, under ‘How to Connect Vizio TV to Soundbar’. You can find other problems that prevent the Soundbar from working further down.
Another thing you can try is updating the firmware and performing a hard reset on both your TV and Soundbar. You might also need to reset the Soundbar to its factory settings. You can find how to do this at the beginning of this article.
How to Connect Vizio TV to Soundbar
The best way to connect your Vizio Soundbar to your Vizio TV is to use a HDMI cable. This process is detailed below.
Step 1: Ensure both the Soundbar and TV are off.
Step 2: Plug your HDMI cable into the TV’s ‘HDMI 1 (ARC)’ port.
Step 3: Plug the other end of the cable into the Soundbar’s ‘HDMI OUT (ARC)’ port.
Step 4: Turn the TV and Soundbar on. If your TV automatically discovers the Soundbar, you are finished. Otherwise, continue to the next step.
Step 5: Navigate to ‘Menu > Audio > Digital Audio Out’.
Step 6: Select ‘Dolby Digital’ or ‘Bitstream’.
Step 7: Navigate to ‘Menu > System
Step 8: Enable both ‘CEC’ and ‘ARC (SAC)’.
Step 9: Under ‘CEC’, select ‘Device Discovery’.
You can also connect the TV to the Soundbar via a composite, digital optical or digital coaxial cable. You do not need to enable the ‘CEC’ or ‘ARC’ features for these cables, and the TV will not need to ‘Discover’ the speaker. To cycle through these ports, you will need to press the ‘Input’ button on the Soundbar remote or on the Soundbar itself.
How to Connect Vizio TV to Soundbar Bluetooth
Vizio TVs have what is known as Bluetooth LE technology. This means that the Bluetooth connection is low energy and can only support connections between smaller devices such as a mobile phone.
They cannot connect wirelessly to a Bluetooth speaker. You can only connect other devices to the speaker, or connect the Soundbar to the TV via composite, optical, coaxial or HDMI cables.
Vizio TV Won’t Play through Soundbar
Before you try any other troubleshooting for the TV not playing through the Soundbar, you should check the following.
· The Soundbar is turned on and receiving power.
· The volume is turned up on the Soundbar.
· The ‘Mute’ button is off on the TV, Soundbar and device.
· The ‘Input’ needs to be changed on the Soundbar.
If none of these simple solutions work, you can try changing your audio settings from one of the digital settings mentioned above (’Dolby Digital’ or ‘Bitstream’), to ‘PCM’. It may be that the TV is unable to pass through the digital signal.
You can also try changing the output setting in the audio menu from ‘Variable’ to ‘Fixed’ or ‘Standard’. This will prevent the remote control from changing the volume on the TV as well as the Soundbar.
If you are still not getting any audio from the TV, and you have set the Soundbar up correctly using the steps in this article, you may need to consider a hard reset, firmware update or factory reset.

If the sound on your Vizio TV isn’t working, it is possible that you’ve muted the TV or turned down its volume. Ensure all audio input settings are correct, check any sound-producing third-party devices, and inspect all cable connections.
But before we dive into troubleshooting, let’s take a quick peek at all the possible causes that might have impacted your TV’s functionality.
Why Sound Completely Not Working On A Vizio Smart TV?
Here we’ve listed the most frequent causes whenever a Vizio TV suddenly loses its sound. Make sure to take a look at each of them as later we’ll start excluding them one by one.
Here is what might have happened to your Vizio TV audio:
- Muted/turned down the volume – It is possible that you either muted or turned down the volume of your Vizio TV.
- Input issue – If there is a problem setting up the input, your Vizio TV won’t produce any sound either.

How To Fix Sound Not Working On Vizio TV?
Sometimes restarting your Vizio TV regularly might manage to fix the issue, so if you haven’t tried that, make sure to reboot the device at least once.
After all, why should you dive into complex troubleshooting if the issue is minor and a simple restart will get the job done?
Once you’ve performed the restart and the issue is still there you can confidently start from method 1 and build your way up to the more advanced approaches.
Method #1 Check Current Sound Source
First of all, take a peek at whether the source your Vizio TV is currently displaying has any audible sound.
If you’re on a cable channel, however, it is possible that the broadcast’s sounds have been muted or temporarily disabled due to unknown reasons, making your TV go mute until further notice.
What we’re suggesting here is to try switching the channels to determine whether this sound issue is coming from your TV or the channel itself.
If it is the channel, you’re watching there is nothing you can do but wait or change the channel.
Moreover, you can switch to a Watch TV source to determine whether the source device (if any) is causing the trouble.
If it is the source you’re using to deliver content on your TV screen, make sure to restart it and test again.
Method #2 Check Vizio TV Volume
It is possible that you’ve muted or turned the volume of your TV all the way down.
Since many users mentioned that this is occasionally happening unintended, this is why we are including this method here so you could check before going any further.
To determine whether your Vizio TV is muted, you can press the mute button on your remote once.
If a highlighted icon appears on the bottom left of your Vizio TV screen, then this means your TV was muted by now. If you’re just now muting your TV by pressing the button, then you should look for the issue elsewhere.
Method #3 Inspect Cable Configurations
The next step on your way to fixing the static sound TV volume not working on Vizio TV is to inspect the cable configurations.
It is possible that the sound line of your TV is disrupted by an unconnected or loose cable.
All you have to do during this method is ensure all cables plugged into your TV are functional, even the third-party device ones. They can cause interference otherwise, making you unable to hear your TV’s sound.
Furthermore, you can make sure that the cables are not twisted or under pressure and plug your TV directly into a working wall outlet.
Avoid using any power dividers as they are well-known to cause trouble, not only with the sound.
Method #4 Check Vizio TV Audio Input Settings
Sometimes the audio input can be accidentally changed by you or anyone else who is using the TV, while you’re unaware of it.
To give an example, if anyone presses the AUX button on your Vizio smart TV remote, the audio input will be set to the AUX mode.
But since there is no device connected of this kind, your TV will stop producing sounds until further notice.
How To Change Input On Vizio TV?
If you’re not exactly familiar with the way of switching the input on your Vizio TV, you must look for the button labeled “INPUT” on your TV remote. Press it once until the input menu appears.
In this menu, if you have a soundbar connected to your TV, select the confirm button below “Soundbar”, if you’re using the TV’s default speakers, click on “DEFAULT”.

Method #5 Remove Interference
If the sound on Vizio TV not working even after you’ve made sure that the rightful audio input is selected, then there could be a 3rd party device interfering.
The fastest way around would be to disconnect ALL devices that are plugged to your Vizio TV.
Again, make sure that the DEFAULT speaker mode is enabled and go to Watch TV. Select a channel and check for audio. If the issue is still there, here is what to do:
- Unplug your TV from the power outlet.
- Wait for several minutes.
- Plug your TV into the power.
This is the so-known power cycle, and it should help in case there was something interfering and disrupting the power supply.
Method #6 Factory Reset/Clear Memory
As you might have guessed it is time to revert your TV back to its default state. If nothing so far helps, then there is something wrong either with the hardware or the software.
In this step, we’ll exclude the OS as a possibility by performing a factory reset.
Note: The factory reset will wipe clean TV memory, which means that ALL settings including your WiFi passwords and configuration will be permanently lost.
Here is how to revert your Vizio TV to default settings:
- Take the Vizio Remote and press the Menu button.
- Go to System.
- Locate and highlight Reset & Admin.
- Press OK on your remote to confirm.
- Choose Reset TV to Factory Defaults and confirm again by pressing OK.
- Lastly, choose Reset, and again, press OK.
- Wait for the TV to turn off.
At this point, your TV will reset to factory default settings and you should carry out the initial setup.

Method #7 Bypass TV Speakers

That’s one reason they became a popular brand, though the reality is that they deliver solid TVs at a very reasonable price.
Of course, no TV brand is without issues, and some people have reported not being able to hear sound from their Vizio TV. However, there are a few basic checks I can show you how to perform, and see if that gets you on the road to being able to hear as well as see your Vizio TV.
The Solutions – No Sound Coming from Vizio TV
There are some basic checks that you can perform to see where the issue with sound is coming from.
Check the TV. Unplug the TV from the wall outlet and leave it for 30 seconds or so. Plug it back in and retest. This allows the TV to fully power down and reset. If the issue was a temporary voltage or power issue, it should now be resolved.
Check the cables. This is usually the second thing to test. Have any of the cables been knocked or moved? Make sure all are seated fully and swap out different cables if you have spares. If you use HDMI, definitely swap for a spare to test as HDMI cables, particularly manufacturer-provided cables, are notoriously flaky.
Check the feed. What is providing a signal to the TV? Is it a cable box? Satellite? Stream? Change the feed to something different and see if the problem persists. If you have a cable box connected, stream something over WiFi or connect a laptop or mobile and cast something to the TV. If audio works when you change the feed, it is the feed and not the TV. If there is still no sound coming from your Vizio TV, it may be a fault or a settings issue.
Check external audio. If you use a soundbar or surround sound, remove it and use the default speakers to test. If you get sound, it’s the external hardware. If you don’t, it’s the TV.
Check other devices. If you have a gaming console, Amazon Firestick, Roku device, or any other tech that you can connect to your TV try that. Assuming the sound works for your Xbox but not your cable box, the issue is either a setting in the cable box (for example) or the HDMI port. If you suspect the latter, plug your cable box into the same port as the Xbox and see if the sound works. Assuming it does, you have a bad port on your TV. Check audio settings. Access the audio settings on the TV menu and check the settings. You can return them to defaults by selecting Reset in the audio section. Confirm the change and retest. This should not really change anything but is worth trying.
Perform a Factory Reset. Depending on what the troubleshooting steps above have revealed, you can attempt a factory reset of your TV to get your audio working again. Although this reset won’t help hardware issues, it will help software and settings malfunctions. Simply travel to the Menu on your TV and use the remote to click on “Reset & Admin.” Once there, click on the option to “Reset to Factory Defaults” and follow the on-screen prompts.
Troubleshooting TV audio
When troubleshooting any technical issue, it is good practice to simplify the setup as much as possible. In this situation where we have no sound coming from a Vizio TV, you should remove all external audio and input devices except one. For example, I tend to connect a DVD player to the TV using HDMI and then SCART. I use a DVD I know that works and then play it on the TV.
If there is audio, I know the issue is not with the TV itself. If there is no audio, I swap HDMI for SCART and retest. If there is still no audio, I know the TV itself is the issue. This immediately tells me I don’t have to spend hours working through a surround sound setup trying to find a problem when there isn’t one.
If you find yourself in this situation, you could check the audio settings as above or contact Vizio customer services. If your TV is still under warranty, I would make a warranty call and get it fixed. If your TV is out of warranty, you have a decision to make.
