General Rules When Painting Your Home Before Selling

Painting the interior of your house before selling can have a big return on the sales price. It will at the least help you with your home appraisal as the condition of the home is one thing appraisers will be looking for.

It's easy to get lost in the weeds when choosing paint colors for your home. Before we get into specifics, let's take a look at some of the general rules of thumb that you should follow when picking out your paint colors.

You might think that choosing a neutral tone for your paint will be simple. How hard could it be to choose a white, beige, or great paint?

In reality, though, there are more options than could possibly ever go through. This process can be quite overwhelming. On top of that, all paint colors have undertones that are either warm, neutral, or cool.

Choosing the right undertone can help accent the other features in your home. Take a look at the floors in your home and consider whether the undertones are warm or cool. It's important to understand that the other features in your home will impact how your paint color looks. For this reason, you will likely want to complement floors with warm tones and, similarly, complement floors with cool tones with a cool paint color.

Paint colors that have warm undertones can exaggerate the appearance of natural light and create an inviting and cheery atmosphere. It is often recommended to choose a paint color that is at least two shades darker or lighter than your flooring. This ensures that your room looks as big as possible and that there is adequate color contrast.

How to Choose White Exterior Behr Paint Colors

White paint is tricky, because the undertones affect how light plays off the color. Bright whites can look quite stark, especially on the exterior of your home. For that reason, I prefer softer whites for exteriors, but that&#;s just my opinion. As always, it&#;s important to test paint colors on your own house. Look at the colors at different times of day, as the light changes. You might be surprised which color you like best.

Other factors to consider are the style of your home and any trim colors you have in mind. If you live in an adobe-style house in the southwest, you&#;ll probably like warmer whites. However, a Cape Cod in New England looks great in a crisp, cool white, which plays well with blues, reds, and grays.

Neutral and Bright White Exterior Behr Paint Colors

Let&#;s start with the brightest and most neutral Behr whites in the pack: Ultra Pure White, Polar Bear, Silky White, and White.

I never imagined I would find such a beautiful example of Ultra Pure White on an exterior, simply because it&#;s such a bright white (it&#;s my go-to trim color). Because this is a small house with some crisp accent colors, this home looks great in Ultra Pure White.

In the bright Florida sun, Polar Bear white looks fantastic on this single-story home with bright landscaping and cool black accents.

If you read about my favorite Behr white paint colors here, you&#;ll recognize Silky White as the interior color of our entire house. It&#;s a very neutral white, and I feel that in our house, it has a slightly warm undertone. Silky White looks great as an exterior color on this historic cottage.

Behr also makes a very neutral color that&#;s aptly named White. Sometimes it&#;s called White 52, but that&#;s just the identifying code, since it doesn&#;t have a cute color name. It looks great on this beautiful home.

Warm Whites by Behr

Here are some slightly warmer whites that might look great on your home: Cottage White, Swiss Coffee, Spun Cotton, and Original White. So far, I can only find images for Cottage White and Swiss Coffee.

Cottage White looks great on this Mediterranean home with stucco exterior with a clay tile roof.

Swiss Coffee is one of my favorite Behr whites. Check out this cute house with a contrasting black door, shutters, and house numbers.

Cool White Behr Paint Colors

Finally, I found a couple of exterior examples of these cool white Behr colors: Off White and Soft Focus. I&#;d suggest Weathered White and Painter&#;s White as potential cool white colors, too.

When it comes to picking a new exterior paint color, you can’t go wrong with a classic neutral. But if you want to stand out (just a bit!) from block after block of white houses, consider giving your exterior a moody makeover with gray paint. The gray trend of the past few years has made it outside and it turns out that a coat of the hue looks as stylish on wood siding and it does on the living room wall.

Depending on how dark you go, gray paint can exude elegance or make a strong statement. Gray also looks amazing on a number of architectural types, including Shingle Style homes, which have long showcased the color. For Brian Grazer's modern Santa Monica home, architect Mark Rios stained the cedar siding gray to complement the slate roof.

To find the best gray exterior paint for your home, consider the surrounding landscape and nearby architecture. Your home's position in relation to the sun will also impact how the color appears. If you live in a historic or private community, you'll also need to make sure your shade of gray meets the requirements set by the property owner's association or landmark commission. The material of your home can also make a difference in how the color appears. Before you make your final decision and break out the scaffolding, be sure to test the color on the exterior. Paint test areas on the north and south sides of the house so you can see how the shade looks under different lighting conditions. Test out trim at the same time so you can get a feel for the overall finished look (and avoid any potential clashes).
