Take Your Florida Learner's Permit Test Online

To earn your learner's license in the state of Florida, you must pass the Florida learner's permit test, officially known as the Class E Knowledge Exam. If you are under 18, you can take the exam online using your computer, laptop, tablet or smartphone. However, a parent is required to be present during your exam.

The learner's permit exam covers a wide variety of topics from the Official Florida Driver License Handbook, including Florida traffic laws, safe driving practices and traffic control identification.

Additional exam topics include:

  • Seat belt laws
  • Vehicle control
  • Lane controls
  • Speed limits
  • Turns
  • Yielding the right of way
  • Vehicle restrictions
  • Parking restrictions
  • Maintaining attention
  • Headlight use
  • Signaling
  • Licensing
  • Insurance

Example Permit Test Question

Here is an example of a learner's permit test question from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles:

When you are driving on a highway that does not have a paved shoulder, if your vehicle breaks down you should:

  1. Try to get your vehicle completely out of the traffic lanes and off the paved surface of the highway before stopping.
  2. Try to bring your vehicle to a stop on the right side of the highway, with all four wheels still on the paved surface.
  3. Try to stop your vehicle with your right wheels off the paved surface of the highway and your left wheels still on the paved surface.

Do you know the answer? The correct response is "A."

How to Study for the Permit Test

The permit exam has a total of 50 multiple-choice questions. To pass the exam, you must score at least 80 percent, which is 40 out of 50 questions correct. The topics you need to study and understand are covered in the Official Florida Driver License Handbook.

However, the handbook is over 100 pages long, and some teens might find it intimidating. While it is vital to read the entire handbook, an online prep course may help you better understand key topics covered on the learner's permit test.

The Permit Prep Course at FirstTimeDriver.com is designed to help you pass the test the first time. It includes videos, practice exams and test-taking tips. Also included is an online driver education course that will help prepare you for your driving test.

Special Requirements for the Online Permit Test

You must be under 18 to take the online permit exam. And you cannot reference any outside materials or ask anyone for help while taking the test.

A parent or legal guardian needs to be present while you take the exam. Before you receive your permit, your parent or guardian must fill out a Parent Proctoring Form. This form must be signed in front of a notary public or in the presence of a driver's license examiner or agent.

A provision of Florida law states that any person who passes a Class E Knowledge Exam provided by an authorized third-party administrator may be randomly selected to appear in person for a mandatory retest. Students receive no prior notice and do not have to pay an additional fee.

What Are the Permit Restrictions?

With a learners license, you are only allowed to drive in the daylight, until 3 months have passed. At this point, you may drive until 10 p.m. However, you'll need to be accompanied at all times by an individual who holds a valid drivers license and is over the age of 21.

Next Up: The Florida Operators License

You did it! You're one step closer to your full license. In order to move on to this stage, however, you'll need to hold your learners license for a year (12 months), if you're a minor. During this year, you are required to:

  1. Get 50 hours of behind-the-wheel driving practice (10 of these must occur at night)
  2. Get a form signed by your parent/guardian that verifies your completion of these hours.

Although Florida does not require you to take a driver training course, successful completion will allow you to bypass the driving test you would normally have to take to get your operator's license.

Once you've finished these steps, you can apply for your operators license! To apply, you must:

  • Be between 16 and 17 years of age
  • Have no traffic convictions on record
  • Submit your driving hour certification form
  • Take a driving test (unless you have proof of driver training course completion)

Taking the Florida Driving Skills Test

If you do have to take the Florida driving skills test you can make an appointment with your local DHSMV office through the OASIS website. You’ll also have to supply your own vehicle that’s safe, registered and insured.

What to Expect During Your Florida Driving Test

Most of the Florida driving skills test takes place on the streets in actual traffic. Your driving examiner will ride along with you making sure that you’re in complete control of the vehicle and follow all the laws. It’s highly likely that your examiner will be taking notes. Don’t let this worry you, it's normal!

The Florida driving skills test covers all of the essentials, including:

  • Safe lane changes and passing
  • Yielding the right-of-way
  • Parking: straight, parallel, on grade
  • Stopping quickly
  • Making proper turns including a U-turn and a
  • 3-point turn within 20-40 feet
  • Backing up
  • Obeying speed laws, road signs and traffic signals
  • Proper use of turn signals and mirrors
  • Following at a safe distance
  • Safely approaching a crossing

At the end the examiner will let you know the results and explain any mistakes you might have made during the test. If you pass you can hand over your learners permit and get a Florida drivers license!

What Are the Florida Operators License Restrictions?

  • As a 16-year-old with an operators license, you may drive between the hours of 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. If you are going to work, or are accompanied by a 21-year-old licensed driver, you may drive outside of these times.
  • If you are 17 and have your operators license, you may drive between 5 a.m. and 1 a.m. The same conditions apply for 17-year-olds when it comes to driving outside of these hours.

And Finally: The Full License

All you have to do to get your full teenage drivers license in Florida is wait until you turn 18, and apply for it! You don't have to take any other tests. If you're 18 years of age and have never had a drivers license, you can apply for a full license; you'll just need to submit proof that you completed a Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education course.

The best part is that the full license doesn't have any restrictions! Enjoy your freedom!

Yes, we are approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles as a Third Party Test Administrator for the Class E Knowledge Exam online. We have been assigned Office #NT3. You can click here to find us listed on FLHSMV's website.

You can take the Practice Test as many times as you need until you feel ready to take the actual Permit Test. When you complete the Practice Test, it will immediately start over so you can try it again. The results of your practice attempts are not saved or sent to the DMV.

No. The Florida Dept. of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) requires the online test to be proctored by a parent or guardian.

This means that your parent or guardian must monitor you while you take the test, but they are not allowed to assist you in any way. Your parent/guardian will be required to provide their driver license number before the test begins to certify that they are monitoring you during the exam. If your parent/guardian does not have a valid driver license number, then FLHSMV requires you to take the Permit Test in person at a DMV or Tax Collector's office.

If you have any questions about these regulations, feel free to contact us at [email protected], or contact FLHSMV directly at (850) 617-2505.

The State of Florida allows you 3 online tries for the Permit Test. Our fee covers your first online attempt you take with us, but if you fail the test and want to try again, the State of Florida imposes a retesting fee. The fee is $15 for a 2nd attempt. If the 2nd attempt is failed, another $15 will be required before you can attempt the test a 3rd time.

If you fail 3 online attempts, you will have to present yourself personally at DMV for your fourth and subsequent attempts. If your first online attempt was with another company, and your next online attempt is with us, that would count as a total of two online attempts towards your maximum of 3 online attempts allowed.
