Steps for Clearing BIOS Password Check

If users set BIOS Password (Supervisor Password and/or User Password) for a security reason, BIOS will ask the password during systems POST or when systems enter to BIOS Setup menu. However, once it is necessary to bypass the password check, users need to short the HW Gap to clear the password by the following steps:

  • Power Off a system, and remove HDD, AC and Battery from the machine.
  • Open the back cover of the machine, and find out the HW Gap on M/B as picture.
  • Use an electric conductivity tool to short the two points of the HW Gap for three seconds.
  • Plug in AC, keep the short condition on the HW Gap, and press Power Button to power on the system till BIOS POST finish. Then remove the tool from the HW Gap.
  • Restart system. Press F2 key to enter BIOS Setup menu.
  • If there is no Password request, BIOS Password is cleared. Otherwise, please follow the steps and try again.

Two possible approaches can be used when it becomes necessary to reset the BIOS on an Acer computer due to a lost BIOS password. Some Acer computers have a special jumper that can be used to clear the BIOS settings, including the password, while others require the clock battery be removed. The battery removal process works on all Acer computers, including desktops or laptops, and it is often the only alternative available when the BIOS passwords need to be reset.

Acer Desktop Computers

Step 1

Disconnect the power cord from the back of the Acer computer.

Step 2

Remove the case cover and attach an anti-static wrist strap to one wrist and to the case frame.

Step 3

Remove the coin cell BIOS clock battery for one hour, or locate the BIOS reset jumper as indicated on the motherboard with the markings "CLRP1" and move the jumper into the "Clear" position for one hour. This is determined easily as these jumpers only have two positions, "Clear" and "Run" and they will always be found in the "Run" position during normal operation.

Step 4

Replace the battery or set the jumper back to the "Run" position.

Step 5

Replace the cover and power on the computer.

Acer Laptop Computers

Step 1

Disconnect the power adapter from the back of the Acer laptop.

Step 2

Close the lid and flip the Acer laptop upside down.

Step 3

Remove the main battery from the laptop and open the hard drive compartment cover by removing the screws and sliding the cover about a quarter inch and then lifting it up.

Step 4

Remove the two screws holding the hard drive in place and slide the hard drive out of the system.

Step 5

Disconnect the small power lead that attaches the BIOS clock battery to the motherboard and wait about an hour before reconnecting it. Alternately locate the small metal pads on the motherboard marked "CLRP1" and place a conductive tool across the contacts, and then connect the power cord and hold the power button on until the system boots up past the BIOS power on self test. Release the power button and disconnect the power cord.

Step 6

Replace the hard drive and battery, and connect the power adapter.

  • Use an anti-static wrist strap when working inside any computer by attaching one end of the strap to either wrist and attaching the other end to a grounded object, such as the grounding screw on an outlet or the case of the computer.

  • Check with the manufacturer when asked to reset a password to determine proper ownership and avoid repairing a stolen computer.

How to Reset an Acer BIOS Password

Acer is a leading computer hardware manufacturer. They make desktop computers, notebooks, monitors, projectors, servers, and storage devices.

Every Acer computer and laptop comes with a pre-installed BIOS software. This BIOS software is generally protected and secured by some password. Because it is a common tendency for any person to forget passwords, this article specifically discusses about resetting or recovering BIOS password of any Acer computer or laptop.

Mentioned below are few ways by which an Acer’s BIOS password can be reset or recovered.

Using Acer eSettings Management

This method will work only if you can boot into your Acer computer. Once you boot in, you can use Acer eSettings Management to reset the BIOS password.

Note: Installing Acer Empowering Technology is a prerequisite to use Acer eSettings Management. Both utilities can be downloaded here.

Step 1: Open Start Menu by clicking the Start button on your desktop.

Step 2: Go to All Programs > Empowering Technology > Acer eSettings Management.

Step 3: Click BIOS Passwords near the footer of the screen.

Step 4: With the Create Password or Remove Password options, you should be able to regain control.

Using Computer Hardware

This method involves fiddling with the computer hardware and components. Proceed only if you’re confident enough to do this task. This may also void your warranty period. The steps below are mentioned for both, desktop computers and laptops.

Step 1: Disconnect the power cord from your desktop computer or laptop.

Step 2: Remove the cabinet cover of your desktop.

For a laptop, turn it upside-down and remove the battery. Open the hard drive compartment by sliding the cover out. Unscrew and pull out the hard drive from your laptop.

Step 3: Locate a coin-shaped clock battery (also known as CMOS Lithium battery) and remove it. Keep it aside for at least an hour.

For a laptop, disconnect the tiny power lead that connects the clock battery to the motherboard. Keep it disconnected for at least an hour.

Otherwise, you can also locate a BIOS reset jumper marked CLRP1. Move this jumper to Clear position. Let it be in this condition for at least an hour.

Step 4: After about an hour, replace the battery in the socket or move the jumper back to the Run position.

Step 5: Fit the cabinet cover and start your computer.

If done right, your computer or laptop should boot up without asking for any BIOS password.

Contacting Acer Customer Support
